I don't agree. For a first officer flying with a captain that he's never flown with, I think respect should be shown, from the get go, or until such time as the captain shows he's not worthy of it. At that time, respect is fairly withdrawn. Just my opinion.
Gotta go, it's off to Chinese Food with friends.

Merry Christmas to All.

I don't know I just don't see Captains as great as guys like JJ do. Being a former military guy I see the cockpit a bit more as two guys working together with one guy getting 51% of the vote (at least that's the way it is in the Navy). I've rarely flown with Captains that are all that impressive in the jet - most have decent landings, don't understand PROF that well and make just about an equal amount of mistakes (albeit small) that the FOs make and both do a good job of backing each other up. Furthermore I haven't heard about too many accidents where the Captain took all the heat and the FO got off scott free. If you're very lucky, the Captain might know the right way to get to the Ramp Office at the odd outstation or know the procedures for check in internationally but outside of that I don't see a huge amount of difference. That being said I fully respect their authority as the one "signing" for the jet and the one far more senior and therefore gets paid a lot more. I just don't see them quite as high and might as JJ does. Please enlighten me.

You're right. As an MD-11 captain I find it's even more a team effort, and I make sure the lines of communication stay open. There's less room for error in a two man cockpit without that third set of eyes, and I find I'm even more reliant on the FO (and RFO's) than when I was on a three man airplane.

Fortunately for me, virtually all of the FO's I've flown with have been outstanding, and those having a bad day were still capable, and caught their mistakes as soon as I did. Sounds like you're frustrated that you know more about the jet than your captain. I guess you should upgrade as soon as possible, maybe even to the 727 left seat so you can fly with your favorite captain all the time...

reminds me of a pilot on a blind date, "Well, enough about me, let's talk about airplanes!"

Tuck,

Why do you think FDX Capts don't understand PROF, is it training in your opinion or do you think they aren't hiring qualified candidates (trainable) ?
Do you think your Navy background helped a lot ?

I'm new on the MD11, do you have a hints or tips to better understand PROF...if it's a long list, maybe a new thread ???

To bring this full circle specifically at UPS, many of the over 60 guys will be coming off the backseat of the steam gauge DC8/727/747 and will be going to the -400 or the MD11 (both Atari Ferraris). I'm sure your tips on PROF and conversely applied to VNAV for the -400 would be helpful.

Thanks in advance,

FF

BTW - I've only been a Capt on the MD-11 for 18 months and I understand PROF just fine! Of course the 9 yrs I sat in the right seat of the -11 helped!
