If we hire 50 in 08 I would be shocked! Flying the line last week I actually heard the "F" word mentioned. I really find it hard to believe that, but this is UPS you know. I can see them doing it just to divide the union even more.

I've heard this too. Would not be surprised BUT...if this happened then the log jam in the training center would get even worse due to people being moved around to fill open spots created by a furlough....before you mention the over 60 guys....Most of the ones I know dont want to come back. They like where they are at. Realistically there are less than 80 that are under 63 and not on a medical...if I read that correctly (too many people watching if they are magically better). A few that have just moved to the back, age 61 or less, are the only ones I hear even mention it.

One thing that is a thought though is a furlough of new hires....this would open vacancies in ANC....it would be the only spot the older guys could get, except the 74 classic guys (since they are being displaced).

Not likely since it takes so long to train....maybe why you have guys that have not worked a day since July 07 and wont start transition training till January 2008. Nice vacation. Long term training must be really hearing it over this kind of stuff.

I would think with the ongoing shortage in ANC there's no way we'd furlough. And besides that, I have to believe that if we didn't furlough after 9/11 then we wouldn't now.

And what was that whole deal of 600 crewmembers in ANC? A slowdown in hiring to help clear a huge logjam in the training center I can see, but not a furlough.

I'm with you man, but this is UPS we are talking about here. They don't always see the big picture. I think they tried to furlough after 9/11 if I am not mistaken.

It's in the contract that if they furlough, the union can call for an open time ban.

On some fleets, I think an open time ban would hurt pretty bad.

As long as you didn't have people still picking it up......I don't think this would happen though...when it hits the fan this group of guys/gals stick together pretty good...IMHO

You might want to reword this being Christmas and all. That was a miracle, this is just business.

You'll probably have the over 60 guy pick up all the open time. Why not make more money. Got to pay for their new 4th home and second plane.
