It is obvious that pilots need to retire from active flying at part 121 airlines at the age of 60. The majority of the people that I've known over the years have been WAY wacky-the vast majority have been unable for an FAA medical, even if they didn't want one.
But several +60 people that I've flown with were REALLY REALLY gone not just in a physical sense, but in a mental situation. I had one guy start to preach to me in my hotel room after we flew to Hong Kong. He had his bible out and everything- he kept quoting his CRAP to me until I finally shut the DOOR on him. I refused to fly with him, but he was one of the people that wanted to be a Captain again!
Listen: I'd work with the guy. But the first time the religion reared its' ugly head...I'd walk out the door. That includes half-way across the Atlantic. This bastard could land the airplane by himself, as far as I was concerned!
I suspect that +60 people are a MESS. A few will test normal, but the vast majority really aren't fit to work at Taco Bell. Why are they considered for flying duty at Fedex and a few others?

H.R. 4343, the "Fair Treatment for Experienced Pilots Act,"
I like the name - NOT
Does this mean if I was hired at 55 and don't have any experience yet - I still have to retire at age 60??
When they pin on a name like that you know the whole thing is just politics. The longer we work at our normal payrate the longer the IRS (Federal Government) gets to collect higher taxes from us!!!

I saw a pilot the other day getting off the crew bus. This was the most painful person I have witnessed in a long time. It took them 4 trips on and off the bus to get 3 bags off. They had an expression on their face as if we just landing on mars for the first time. This person was nowhere near 60 yrs old.
I see guys way under 60 who are so fat that I almost smile when I see them because I am sure they are senior to me.
I flew with a Rope a few weeks ago that could do physical and mental laps around me any day of the year.
The lesson, everyone ages differently. I feel there needs to be a true test, physical and mental, to determine if we are safe to fly.

If you really think that it was because of our union that this thing passed both Houses of Congress Unanimously I've got a great stock pick that I'll sell to you...
Most of us are peeved about this, but it's time to get over the FDX ALPA bashing--the company loves this and it really is getting OLD!

From HR 4343, you can thank our union for these words:
`(e) Applicability-
- `(1) NONRETROACTIVITY- No person who has attained 60 years of age before the date of enactment of this section may serve as a pilot for an air carrier engaged in covered operations unless--
- `(A) such person is in the employment of that air carrier in such operations on such date of enactment as a required flight deck crew member; or
`(B) such person is newly hired by an air carrier as a pilot on or after such date of enactment without credit for prior seniority or prior longevity for benefits or other terms related to length of service prior to the date of rehire under any labor agreement or employment policies of the air carrier.

The reason ALPA is pleased with the included language is that language specifically excludes the over 60 guys who already retired. Without that they could've come back.
Furthermore, if we come up with subsets of seniority, we are going to be screwed for much longer than 5 years. How did the A and B scales work out in the 80's and 90's?
The point is ALPA didn't do this and couldn't stop this. ICAO started this a couple of years ago and we sat by, stuck our heads in the sand and said it won't happen here and then act surprised that it came to pass.
