Happened to me the other day.

Unlucky captain had to DH IND-ORD-MEM after we flew in from the west coast. Delays at ORD were already 45min when he left for the terminal. He had to endure the crap pairing while I was deviating. Paring was rebuilt and I ended up with and extra hour of pay at 150%.

I owe a few beers next time we fly together.

This happened to me two weeks ago. We actually had three hours to make the 2nd to last flight out of ATL. Crew skeds contacted us and told us they revised the pairing...ended up with a layover, and DH the next morning. Got the extra duty pay and draft for going into a day off. Not the best way to get it...but got it anyway. If they are going to schedule so tightly, let the house of cards tumble!

Default Grievance References

Here is what the company hangs their hat on. So if everyone is deviating it becomes a mute point. But if you are doing a scheduled leg (no deviation), they have to rebuild.

Had 4hr MX delay on DH out HNL late to DFW. Capt dev'd all and I dev'd on 2nd leg to MEM not the first. They rebuilt to show late arrival to DFW and later flt to MEM. Got draft and FAR pay (wonder if the bean counters noticed )

02-15 Trip Reassignment (ALPA Login required):

The Company’s position is that since First Officer XXXX and his crew were deviating they are not required to revise the pairing to have an actual operating deadhead flight. . .

Arbitrator . . . stated that the Agreement does not simply guarantee that a change in the backend deadhead must result in a longer trip and a higher trip guarantee. Additionally, he stated, that the Agreement doesn’t require the Company to build fictitious schedules that will not be flown just to maximize the potential that a pilot has for additional compensation.
02-16 Trip Rebuild (ALPA Login required):

. . . XXX awarded a trip that contained a backend deadhead, which deviated from, scheduled from XXX-XXX-MEM. However, due to ATC delays, the flight from XXX-MEM was cancelled. Contacted crew resources the following day, requesting to have deadhead flight rebuilt to reflect the actual flight would have been scheduled to take. Crew resources denied the request.

The Company’s position is that both had deviated so they are not required to rebuild the deadhead.

As in Grievance 02-15, Arbitrator found that the Company is not required to rebuild trips after the cancellation of a backend deadhead from which the entire crew deviated just to maximize the opportunity for higher pay guarantees.
