Hey, here's some news!
We normally don't do any training or hiring during December. We trained and hired through last December, no problem...
As of this week, the new hires on the MD are getting up to one month off between the fixed based sim portion of training, and the full motion beasts in SDF, ATL, or soon to be MIA and Montreal.
We are VERY short FOs in the SDF MD base....
So, in a nutshell, the training center pipeline is jammed, another realignment bid is coming out in six weeks (the senior 747 classic guys will move to other jets, and everyone hired after 9/06 will be forced to ANC), which will only jam up the limited resources of the training center some more....
We're still very short FOs in SDF....
Don't expect us to begin hiring in earnest for a while again.

Hey Capt,
The good news is that most of the new SDF MD F/Os will be going to ANC. So J/A pay will be abundant out of SDF. In ANC on the MD it is the norm.
I'm not "in the know", but a general observation on my part. The training pipeline is stopped up like a toilet. Unfortunately, there is no plunger to get the "stuff" moving. The MD does not have a short program for those coming onto the property already rated in the airplane. The FAA won't allow it. This would save thousands of duck-ducks and save many weeks in the classroom.
Two of the guys in my class were already rated and had thousands of hours in the MD11. I'm not even going to go into the boredom and shenadigens they partook in to pass the four(4) months of required training.
Get a short program for the MD11 for those who are rated and have time in type. UPS has the resources to do this.
Capt, I agree with you in principle that UPS needs to hire steadily. However, in my opinion, by continuing to hire without having "the plunger" you will be bringing people onto the payroll just to send them home for weeks if not months of vacation.
In retrospect, the hiring pipeline should have been steady for the last few years vis-a-vis the expansion plans in ANC and the transition of the IRO position from Capt to F/O. However, there is nothing we can do about that now. But what we can do something about is the stopped up toilet in the training pipeline.
I started class in Feb 07 and was not released to the line until mid-June...almost 4 months and this was prior to the simulator taking a dump.
At a former airline I was hired Jan 10 and was released to the line Feb 14th. It can be done. The FAA and the insurance company can dictate requirements for new hires to be eligible for a short course. There are plenty of MD11 / 747-400 pilots that are typed, current and qualified on the market.
One other angle, which ties into another thread, is that the management instructors on the MD11 are just getting beat like dogs. Not to bring up the other thread, but the point is, just think what their resignations will do to the pipeline if they remain under this "work till you drop" environment.
Cheers Capt,
FF

Actually had 2 weeks off between FBS and sim. Got called 1 day after FANS for IOE. As far as instructors, UPS has contracted with Delta (DGS) for instruction in ATL.
As far as resignations, NOT! Sick calls yes.

Not to mention the 5 additional MD's and the 7 new 744's....next year
The instructors and managers are gonna get worked for a while.

It just means more JA's for you and me! I know this is not the answer, more bodies are, but this company won't hire if they think they can save a dollar. Its still cheaper to JA a hundred guys a month than it is to get the staffing numbers right. Thats how they think and operate, you and I are not going to change this.

Again, I'll take the devil's advocate position. First off, I want as many bodies behind me as possible, period.
I agree in principle that we need to hire more. Unfortunately the training pipeline has gotten jammed up so badly that a steady stream of hiring will result in newbies on the payroll (salary and benefits) while being given a vacation at home or a non-continous training schedule in SDF. Hmmm...the Winter time in a hotel in Louisville...I'll get the popcorn.
Brownwhalerider, I don't doubt when you say that managment pilot/insctructors are calling in sick because of their overworked status. A couple I've talked to said they are going to "give it till the first of the year" then pull the ripcord and go elsewhere. I think we can agree that the company's utilization of these instructors is causing burnout which is counterproductive to unstopping the training pipeline.
Once again, we need a short course for the MD11 and 747-400 for those hired that are typed, current, and qualified.
JMHO,
FF
