If you haven't figured it out yet --- the 3 key words in this thread are "network, network and network"!

I've never gotten a flying job in my life that wasn't a result of knowing somebody there already. That's what friends are for. When I said that for me it was all luck, i forgot to add that the harder I worked, the luckier I seemed to get ;-0

Albie,

Just as a follow-up to your post.

At UPS, my observation has been that the recent new hires are half with military backgrounds and half with civi.-only backgrounds.

However, the Capts I've flown with in ANC and the F/Os and IROs senior to me are almost all military. In the airline circles I had heard that from the late 90s to most recently, UPS preferred to stay away from furloughed legacy pilots because of their propensity to return to their legacy carrier. Thus, many hiring classes during that time frame included high percentages of military pilots.

The joke on campus that I've heard: UPS stands for:

Usaf
Pilot
Services

Not a cut on the fine mil. folks, just an observation.

FF

I've always heard that UPS's favorite pilot is a Marine that doesn't drink beer (and yes they do exist in extremely small numbers). Thats what I tell everyone interviewing to act like.

Navy mechanic 4 years
GI bill 4 year BS degree with all ratings
3 years CFII/MEI instructing
10 years at CCAir flying Jetstreams
After 23 years and 12,000 hours, hired with FedEx
I had a very lucky journey compared to some.

Private rating in High School, went to a 141 pilot factory for a year to get CFI, got hired as an instructor there and attained my ME&II while teaching there.
Flew part 61 Instruction/Charter for a year
Part 91 Corporate (Turbine) gig.. 2 years.. layoff
Commuter puke, SA-227FO,SF-340FO,SF-340CA,JS3201CA,SF-340FO,JS3201CA
121 Freight CO. 727FE (3.5 years), 727FO (9 years)
Then UPS with about 9K hours.

Here is a key that was posted before. Get you degree in anything... I got lucky and got hired at the 72 outfit with only a smattering of classes, but no degree. Their reqs at the time were 2 years of college. While there I used the Tuition Assistance Program to earn both my 2 and 4 year degrees via Internet correspondence at ERAU. They picked up the whole tab. I only had to pay shipping. Without that degree, I would never have been considered.
Good Luck
PS I will agree with a previous poster that UPS intentionally picks a variety of backgrounds... It seems like there is one guy who "gets the golden ring"... Our class it was a guy with no Jet time.
The only thing in common, they are all great guys to hang around..

Just as an add-on to this thread, what percentage of pilots at fedex/ups do you think have military backgrounds? Do you think as a pure civilian guy it would be much harder for me to get a job at either one or these in 5-10 years?
