DC-8 Emergency Landing at ICT
Anyone heard about the emergency landing in Wichita? I caught the last part of a radio braodcast and they mentioned the lav was on fire.
That must stink....

Cargo plane makes emergency landing
BY STAN FINGER
The Wichita Eagle
A UPS cargo plane made an emergency landing at Mid-Continent Airport shortly before 7 a.m. today after fire broke out on the plane.
The pilot reported the fire in the bathroom at 6:27 a.m. aboard the DC-8, a Sedgwick County dispatch supervisor said. By the time the plane was making its final approach to Mid-Continent, the fire was under control but smoke was in the cockpit.
The plane landed without incident at 6:48 a.m., the dispatch supervisor said. None of the four people aboard was injured.
Haven't heard anything from the company yet. Sounds like a good job getting it down and safely. Good job, guys!

This was in the IPNN today
{DIVERT/SMOKE IN AIRCRAFT}
A UPS DC-8 bound for ONT from SDF was forced to divert to Wichita,
KS (ICT) today after the crew detected smoke in the courier area
of the aircraft. The aircraft was at cruise flight, 165 miles
from Wichita when the crew detected smoke. A preliminary investigation
points to the recirculation fan as the source of the smoke. There
was no evidence of fire. The aircraft landed safely and the crew
was taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution. There were no
known injuries to the crew. The NTSB per CFR part 830 was notified
by UPS and will conduct a table top investigation. The IPA's
Manager of Flight Safety and Safety Chairman are working with
the crew and UPS on the investigation.

I heard the last few transmissions on tower freq when it came in, it was a non-event. How someone on the crew started a fire in the lav is a curious thing though. Quite possibly had nothing to do with the crew, DC8s are pretty old maybe a chafed wire or something.

Specifically it was in the courier area, near the lav, and initial indications is it was a recirc fan.

You guys must have the deluxe model DC-8's with an actual lav. We just had the little port-a-potty sitting there in the middle of the floor. Apparently the good thing about those is that they could not catch on fire. Gla everyone is okay.
