Typical cargo pilot new-hire qualifications
Hey everyone, I'm wondering what a typical new hire for a place like ups or fedex has in terms of flight time and background. do they require time flying for a major airline, or will time at a regional suffice? also how much flight time are they looking for... pic, total, etc.? currently i'm f/o at a regional and have been looking into flying cargo as a long term goal more and more lately. just wondering how i can tailor my career path to get there faster. any comments or advice will be very appreciated. thanks!

Good luck. I knew a captain who had over 15,000 hours, 5+ years as captain on a 737, and prior heavy international captain experience. He had his resume in with UPS for over 5 years before he finally got called for an interview.

Whatever.
I know several guys (FDX) over the last few years who had nothing but B1900 time. Most are flying the MD-11 internationally now.
They had a lot of PIC though. Get the turbine PIC.

Qualifications, luck, timing, and connnections are the key, with emphasis on the last three. I'm obviously lacking one or more. 5000TT, 3500 TPIC in military heavy, flight examiner, int'l experience, 121 experience:
FDX:
4+ years application updates
sponsor
9 internal recs
no call
UPS:
2+ year application updates
mgmt rec
training instructor rec
hooked the freekin psych eval!
Bottom line, no guarantees.

A few buddies of mine got hired at UPS this year with TT around 5200-5500. They came straight from the regionals. About 1500 PIC turbine is good enough for UPS IMO. Some sort of jet time seems to be a must these days.
I would NOT put off upgrade for anything......PIC turbine is what you need.

Man that is too bad..I didn't think anyone can fail that thing. I thought it was just designed to make it look like HR is actually doing something.
Good luck to you...I don't think that is considered a "failed interview"? does it? anyone?

I've flown with a lot of talented, new hires up in ANC. I've been very fortunate.
I don't know all the military acronymns, but most were C130/C17/KC135/KC10 guys.
Most of the civie guys were from non-sked and legacy carriers where they flew as heavy-jet Capts or Co-pilots with approx 6500TT to 15,000 TT and typed in a widebody jet or two, or three, or four.
