My understanding is that the $6.1 BILLION payment didn't go into a "new" pension fund, it was the price of buying their way OUT of the old one...the Central States Pension fund. Similar to "deciding to buy a car that you've been leasing" is the way it was explained to me.

Maybe that's why UPS' stock price went UP when they announced that they were getting out of the CSPF?

Your guess is as good as mine on that. I'm more concerned with UPS' interest in Deutsche Post, and the ramifications it could have for Astar/ABX. "The Bear" has been doing an awful lot of poking around DHL's campsite lately. Clearly, he's interested in what's in the tent.

I don't know what advantage would be gained by UPS buying Atlas, unless it was to have their corporate hands around the throat of DHL's international lift. Integrating Atlas' ops and personell with their own would be pretty much impossible under the current CBA.

Ups does not intergrate personel, they would take the route authority, aircraft and dump the rest. Just like they did with challenge in MIA. May be they want the Atlas operation in Stanstead? Like they wanted Challenges op in MIA.
