Here is another good link I found after a brief search.

I flew with a captain years ago who said, "F/O's pay to fly and Capts pay to go to the hotel." I liked his idea so much to is what I do now as my favorite Capt to fly with.

When we got out, just the Cap'n tipped. I looked like a cheap-@ss. What's up with that?
When he hands you your bag, say "thanks, it's the Capt's turn" or turn to the Capt and say "you have this one"? or "who's turn is it"? or just don't worry about it.
Speaking of tipping..

Does anyone leave tips for the hotel maids?

Domestically, buck a day. Int'l, I leave all the accumulated shrapnel from my pocket on the nightstand. It always kills me when I see the guys with the pouches they buy in Itaewan so they can keep all their foreign change segragated. Philippino pesos are worth 2c each and are the size of man hole covers but boy, it sure is worth hauling that around for months just in case.

I only tip if the driver gives me some info....places to go, eat, or things to do. driving the van is his job i drive a jet its my job. i think drivers get paid min wage not like waiters that means they make as much as a first year fo.

Hopefully you were being sarcastic, but just in case you were serious, please read the below paragraph. If you were being sarcastic, disregard the below paragraph.

Wow! You're one impressive guy. So if you had an hour and a half cab ride from the ramp to the hotel in, say, Hong Kong or Shanghi or Seoul or Newark, and the driver didn't speak English, you'd stiff him because he didn't give you the poop on where to eat Kimchee or boiled octopus? As for the money they make and your comparison to a first year f/o's pay.... you could be right, but their second year is a mirror image of their first, as is their third and forth and.... well, you get the idea. Perhaps you should rethink your (lack of) technique, because, if for no other reason, it provides a disincentive for them to be on time and drive professionally, for the rest of us, who, by the way, usually tip.

True story. we were being dropped off first in Oakland with a Delta crew also in the van. The Captain kept complaining the entire ride about having to go by "cargo" first and asked the driver "why" numerous times. The driver finally said to the Captain while giving us our bags..."because FedEx TIPS". It was very quiet after that.

But, oh the entertainment value when you stack about a dozen of them on top of a San Miguel bottle...

AK,
When I worked at UAL everyone did their own tips. Haven't hit the line yet at new company so I can't say yet.
I've read the posts on this forum and there are both good and bad tips in my opinion.
Big picture tip if you want, don't if you don't. Honestly, I don't care what the Capt thinks, or anyone else. I answer to me in the tip department, and having worked for tips for several years in college I believe I understand it. Next time someone gets cheapo on tips with you ask them if they ever worked for tips. You won't be suprised at the answers.
