I don't know the answer for sure, but a possible answer is that (other than cheap captains) the captain will end up paying tips more often. For example, a front end dead head, return to MEM, if the captain pays the tip for the leg to the ramp, he pays but no one else does. If the captain always starts the tipping, he should end up paying more often or at least the same amount as the F/O.

I flew with a few Captains that didn't follow this tradition, instead had everyone pay their own tip (non three man crew).

Your odds of that happening go to just about zero, if you call her a "stewardess".

They'll improve to about 1,000,000 to 1, if you tip the driver $20, call her a "flight attendant" and offer her $100.

We could eliminate the perception of us looking cheap by just eliminating the stupid tradition of alternating tips. Or, JJ, the other option is to be flexible. What does that mean? Tip a lot more when it's my turn and then tip again when it's the Capt's turn too. So I pay double to prevent looking like an @ss. Good solution. Thanks for all the help.
Unless we have just started using a hotel, the drivers know our routine. They know, at least domestically, that only one of us will tip for the crew. Unless your trying to get a van ride somewhere from the hotel, I wouldn't worry what the driver thinks, anyway, unless you're with a cheap Capt.

Bus,

I'm glad you at least caught the "stewardess". There was suppose to be some humor in my post. Any stewardess that is dumb enough to ask if I want to work for a real airline someday deserves nothing. At what point in life did they graduate from "Stewards and Stewardess" to "Flight Attendants"? About the same time garbage collectors became sanitation engineers. I am tired of political correctness and refuse to participate any longer.

FDX727,

Good points. Thanks. Still, the turnover at hotel-van-driver must be a lot. These young kids don't always get clued in that the FDX guys alternate tips. It'd be nice if we could just all get our own tips for the drivers, eliminate any raised eyebrows.

I was just trying to figure out how to prevent us from looking like jerks to those drivers who aren't as fortunate as we are. When a flight attendant puts out her measly two bucks and I walk away because it's my Capn's turn, that kid thinks our pilots are cheap. I was just looking for a way to get around that without insulting anyone. Again, Geesh.
No, I wasn't trying to lecture you at all. Just pointing out some reasons for tipping in the first place. Your post didn't make you sound cheap or non-tipping. However, I don't think flight attendants tip $2. Most tip either a buck, but some I've seen give .50 cents. As for your desire to not make our pilots look cheap...Good Luck, because you can't spit shine a sneaker. Some of our pilots ARE cheap, no getting around it. Every airline has them. If you're flying with a cheap captain, you can be sure you won't insult him by offering the driver a tip for the both of you. He's immune to such benevolence. If you go to dinner with him, the first words out of his mouth, when the waiter comes will be: "Separate Checks, please."

C'mon now. There's plenty of medication on the market to help you. You can "participate" until you keel over. Just don't call them "stews". Trust me, it'll help.

I married one. Probably should have just stuck to that $100 plan.

Trust me! I don't when I want to get laid. But, the next day she is still a Stew.

JJ - not sure if you're in ANC now or was there once - when I was there last year and every trip I fly with them now (intl as RFO or vice versa) I've never seen "everyone tip" - it seems fairly standard with all the MD-11 crews both domestically and internationally that the tipping is done by taking turns. On a 3 man crew someone's going to get lucky.
