They just sent it out, I'd say in the next week or so most of us should have it. I tried one on at Cintas - pretty nice coat.

Maybe the pilots who do not want a free leather jacket should contact the union and voluntarily "donate" theirs to a new hire??? That shouldn’t be impossible, should it?

Call the IPA EB and suggest it. It is a great idea, but someone needs to send the message. Mine will be that no one wear the leather jacket untill they decide to purchase them for everyone! It would send a good message that everyone was wearing the flasher instead of the leather. (It wouldn't matter to UPS though )
Mine is going to stay in the closet and I'll only wear the black flasher (alas, mine came in) BTW, I'll second your motion with the EB on Monday.

You guys call them "jackets"? I figured they would be refered to as " winged package car operators exterior protective devices"

This is some 9 years ago when I bought it and the pilots’ share to pay was almost $500 then; my old company paid their part too, I think it was about 35-45% of the total price, I can’t remember; anyways, we paid five hundred bucks AFTER the company had paid its share and this was 9 years ago, so yes it was an expensive jacket. (We had it payroll deducted at $50 or so per paycheck.)

Based on the prices our guys will have to pay I think the jackets have actually dropped in price (very possible since they’ve had this specific model for so many years) or maybe UPS got a much better deal since they ordered so many of those jackets; or both.

It’s a great jacket, mine is almost 9 years old and still in great shape, I use it every day when the weather gets cold (yes, I do take the epaulets and my name tag off ).

What I find amazing is that according to the last email some 500 pilots who're entitled to a free jacket still hadn’t ordered one. I think that if someone truly does not like the jacket (totally their option of course) they should notify the union and the union should have the option to get a free jacket from the company meant for this pilot and then “donate” this jacket to a post Sept.1, 2006 new-hire who would love to have a free jacket.

Just an idea, I’m sure it’d never work but I’d hate for our more senior guys to give up some 500 great leather jackets that would make many of our new hires very happy…
I think your last company lied to you and pocketed the difference...

Can you wear these things in rainy weather or does that wreck them? I have never had a leather coat like this before and I was suprised at how heavy it is.

Actually our invoice from Perrone showed the total price minus the company share so I think it was legit. It’s been many years now; I know prices have gone down "thanks" to the friendly China competition...

I’ve been using it in some pretty crappy weather and rain doesn't seem to be a problem at all. About once a year I'd spray it with rain repellent and that's about all care it needs.
