I had the very same leather jacket at one of my previous airlines (except black) and when I called Perrone last week to ask about a size issue (ONT didn’t have any more try-out jackets) they actually had my old measurements on file.

This is some 9 years ago when I bought it and the pilots’ share to pay was almost $500 then; my old company paid their part too, I think it was about 35-45% of the total price, I can’t remember; anyways, we paid five hundred bucks AFTER the company had paid its share and this was 9 years ago, so yes it was an expensive jacket. (We had it payroll deducted at $50 or so per paycheck.)

Based on the prices our guys will have to pay I think the jackets have actually dropped in price (very possible since they’ve had this specific model for so many years) or maybe UPS got a much better deal since they ordered so many of those jackets; or both.

It’s a great jacket, mine is almost 9 years old and still in great shape, I use it every day when the weather gets cold (yes, I do take the epaulets and my name tag off ).

What I find amazing is that according to the last email some 500 pilots who're entitled to a free jacket still hadn’t ordered one. I think that if someone truly does not like the jacket (totally their option of course) they should notify the union and the union should have the option to get a free jacket from the company meant for this pilot and then “donate” this jacket to a post Sept.1, 2006 new-hire who would love to have a free jacket.

Just an idea, I’m sure it’d never work but I’d hate for our more senior guys to give up some 500 great leather jackets that would make many of our new hires very happy…

I just talked to an MD11 new hire who was saying he was glad he didn't get the 747 because they were told in class the extra ANC pay only applied to the MD11.

Keep in mind that the "stipend" only kicks in AFTER you are released to the line. So considering a three to four month training cycle, and through peak yet, there will only be 8 to 9 months to collect the extra. It helps, but don't base your move solely on it.
Good Luck and welcome to ANC

Remember, it's not just a leather jacket, it's a UPS leather jacket.

What a great idea! It makes so much sense....therefore, it will never happen.

Until it does, I guess it's the tan flasher trench coat for me (still haven't received the black one yet).

Arch, Tan flasher coat for me too, cause there is no way I am paying $400. I'd just rather wear my military jacket for free.

Could be worse - haven't received any jacket yet. At least it's not cold and rainy yet in ANC. Of course, it could be a lot worse, I know of some well qualified guys that don't have the job. I wouldn't feel like a real pilot if I wasn't moaning about something. And it is pretty nice having uniforms and luggage provided. Hey - maybe the glass is half full!!!

Sure seems to me that the 744 crews should be offered an incentive, too...
