IPA straw vote results
9-24-07
The following is a statement released today by the IPA Executive Board:
An unprecedented 80.4% of the eligible IPA membership participated in
the EB Straw Poll concerning the possibility of organizing UPS’s Flight
Qualified Supervisors. Of that number, 1687 members, or 79%, expressed
their support for moving forward on the issue while adopting the principle
of a fair and equitable integration of the seniority list based on date
of hire. On that same issue, 438 members, or 20.5% expressed their opposition.
A spreadsheet of all the totals is attached to the bottom of this statement.
What do these results mean? First of all, the results demonstrate our
core unity has never been higher. Participation in any straw poll in
these numbers is unprecedented. The results signify that the pilot group
is fully engaged and ready to take on issues that affect our daily lives
and job security. Second, the results also signify that nearly four
fifths of our group is committed to moving forward on the specific issue
of organizing UPS’s Flight Qualified Supervisors. The EB believes this
issue is important and a solid majority of the pilot group is of like
mind.
Having said that, the EB believes work has to be done before taking
additional steps. Over 400 of our members indicated their opposition
and over 500 did not participate in response to one critical question.
On such an important issue, we believe we can do better. One key may
be in education. In the future, we will develop FAQ’s and other educational
materials aimed at providing more in depth explanations of the issues
involved. At an appropriate time, a follow-up poll may be conducted.
The numbers send the signal to UPS that this issue cannot and will not
go away. Never before have so many flight qualified supervisors contacted
IPA seeking our assistance. Never before have so many of our members
expressed their determination to change the status quo. Working together,
we can and will succeed.
