Some of the Shorts had a freon a/c unit when they were still pax birds. In the days before electricity ...

It was mounted in the top center of the bulkhead that seperated the pilots from the pax. If I remember correctly (just for FF) it could only be used on the ground. It was dead weight once airborne.

I guess that is what FF was talking about with the freon comment ....

This freon unit would just add weight and was most likely stripped from most cargo birds. It could then be sold to a local mobile home estate as central air.

It must have been nice to have plenty of heat, to have more than what you know what to do with. I have to fly with my alpine skiing gear...

Flew with the gloves, knit hat & long johns in the passenger models too. And the trash bag for rain from the overhead hatch in the right seat.

Freon does not supply heat ... it was basically a window a/c unit for the passengers ... FWIW

I felt your winter pain !

Fonte and Thompson! Wow, that brings back memories. I keep in touch with Fonte, he just retired. I went to Orkis' retirement party years ago, it was a blast. Thompson vanished off the face of the earth, does anybody know what happened to him? Fred Spatz' son is here at UPS.

Heat works quite well when the over pressure/temp lights don't come online. I do enjoy having to choose between vanes and heat sometimes....

We did explore the lower limit of the certified operating temps for the shorts last week. Turns out the old girls really don't like being cold, in fact they get all hormonal about it.

I hope your joking about being near -40°C.

But don't all our 360's have the low pressure light screwed out because their always illuminated when either, or both, bleeds are open, cus it just goes along with all the stuff that doesn't get fixed around here.

People leaving. Which seat are you talking about?

-40. We were up in the friendly land to the north. Quite an interesting time.

The low pressure "bleed" light works on all planes i've flown. i.e at low power etc. Its the overtemp light you don't want to see when you and your f/o are hugging each other to keep warm.

Any idea on how long after you submit a resume you get a call?
