World Fall 2007 Hiring
#83
The schedules are always in flux. It's just part of life at World.
I haven't jumpseated since 2001. Homebasing rocks.
We are not a scheduled carrier and those that come from that background are sometimes disappointed by the work rules. Is it a bad life? Far from it. It is far different than the majors. It's just apples and oranges. Which do you like better?
Thanks for taking the time to make post! There is nothing like accurate timely accurate information to help people make informed decisions.

World has been on the verge of going out of business for 60 years.
I can't speak of the other carriers and to be frank, it's a crap shoot. Of the 3 carriers that Global owns, World is doing the best. We are making money while ATA is bleeding alot of cash and North American is bleeding less. The CEO of Global just resigned (fired?). Pre 9/11, I think most folks would have said it's a no brainer. Go with Airtran, of the three. Now, with high fuel prices???
The one thing I will say is that comparing World to Airtran is compairing apples to oranges. It's a totally different lifestyle. Your spouse (if you have one or thinking of getting one in the future) will determine if you like World. I'd guess that Southern is more like World in this area.
You've asked a hard question to which there is no good answer.

It looks like ATA is getting out of the passenger business. Do you think this might affect World? Does World have any plans to obtain more fuel effecient airplanes or keep operating the DC-10 and MD-11? I know that Airtran and World are two different worlds.. Not married, just wondering if given the choice which one would the World Guys choose, not given your current seniority.

Hey vort...I am a DC10 new hire at World. I flew for ATA for eight years and loved every minute of it. I know I'm gonna love finishing my career at World. Homebasing rocks, the cameraderie of the crews, the time off and varied flying are all just a few reasons why I'd choose World Airways hands down over Airtran.Coupled with the fact that it's gonna get economically yucky in a few months if years.Where do you wanna be in the downturn. In my opinon it's World Airways. Good luck in your decision.

Flying right now with an FE that worked at Southern one time in his career. He said they weren't as organized as World in some ways. For example showing up in some 3rd world country and Southern would have nothing set up. No ground handlers, etc. Of course World drops the ball every now and then but not too often. The most important thing to consider coming to World or most ACMI's is that at some points you can be gone for a long time. I'm pushing 2 1/2 weeks on the road right now. But they own me til the 20th and I can't complain. I've seen a bunch of different countries and drank a bunch of beers in the last 2 1/2 weeks, and I loved every minute of it.

You might either check in on a Southern thread or start a new one asking the question. I think you'd get a better answer.
