Phantom Tablet PC's
Anybody in the "know" have any idea when we are getting the laptops or as I was told, Fujitsu Tablet PC's? I heard from an instructor in the school house well over a year ago that he was involved in the project and we would be seeing them soon. Well, what is the definition of "soon"?
I have been contemplating upgrading my laptop for more than a year now but I don't want to buy one and have the company issue us one right after I take the plunge.
As we all know you really can't operate efficiently on the road as a pilot without a PC. Our bidpacks are electronic, VIPS is mainly web based, EFB's in the cockpit, LIDO plate review and electronic expense reports are just a few examples.
I have a theory. We aren't asking where the laptops are and they are thinking we all bought or will buy one on our own dime and use it for company business so why spend the money.

The laptops are being beta tested by a few check airmen. That info is 2 months old and JAN 08 was the earliest possible date for crewmembers. They have to prove themselves to save money. I don''t think they are going to save the company enough money to be fast-tracked like the fox expense system was.

Rumour I got from a LCA was the issue was upload time. Right now the company wants us to be able to plug in to an outlet in the major hubs (mem, ewr, oak, etc) and be able to upload all the correct current info onto the computers in 5 minutes or less. It is taking too long right now.

Yeah,
Try logging-in in IND and doing anything in less than five minutes.
I would bite the bullet and get a new one...worst thing that happens, you have a new computer for the house(or crash pad).

D/H'd with an LCA who was involved in the test. Our new laptop had significant problems connecting to internet because of all the security software loaded on it. I hope they scrub it. I like my Dell 700m.
