Manning Level Hypothesis
Fedex is currently overmanned because we did away with the 48hr blackout of open time.
I have no facts to back this up with and wasn't even my idea. But I believe that we have too many reserves because guys pick up most of the trips when they drop them in open time in the morning. I bet the company is going "Why didn't we think of this sooner?" These guys will fall all over themselves to fly extra at straight pay. What do you guys think of this theory? BS or valid?

The pairings are being tweaked (especially domestically) to get ready for Jan08, when the trip rig changes. Just look at the comparison of trips that now pay block time versus trip rig, it will continue to be changed towards higher block. The week long domestic trips that we thought would pay more based on 3.75/1 will be revised right out of our pockets...just watch.
IMHO.

True, plus the additional squeeze play currently going on with the pairings and things like recurrent training bids the Company is benefiting from productivity increases.

Hog,
I think you are 100% correct. Before the contract change, people would have to put in a general makeup, and even with constraints, it would come out pot luck. Sooner or later, people will get tired of flying 100+ hour months. But reserve is very good at times now, even though moving R days can be next to impossible at times....

No Problem dropping R Days

If this is true about overmanning due to open time not being blacked out (and I think it is) why is it still so hard to drop R days in the maddog??? Is there any way to figure out how VIPs decides "insufficient reserves"... besides looking at open time? I tried to drop 2 days with nothing in open time and received "disapproved due to insufficient reserves."

Again--I LIKE having more control. The company wins productivity, and guys get another shot at adding or enhancing their schedules. While we might end up with a few fewer bodies, I think this is one of those rare win/win kind of deals. The comany gets more work, the dudes who want to work can, and the R day bidding sloths get called out less (guess which one I am...) If the company tweaks it too lean down the road, the first time the MD11 FOs again decide "enough" they will be hurting. I don't know if they will do that to themselves again.
No answer for you on the MD11. R day movement on the 727 has been pretty easy so far this year.

I asked this before without a response...but if the trips are being optimized on the Airbus before they use the domestic solve on everyone...why are there NO DP's on the Airbus and a ton on all the other airframes???

I haven't had any trouble dropping R Days in the Bus. I've dropped 6 R Days and picked up 4 days of trips for the same pay and will now be at home 2 extra days this month without gaining or losing pay.

In ANC I haven't had an R-day move approved in about 6 years. I still don't understand how our new contract has convinced so many guys that flying make-up for straight pay is a better deal than flying a draft trip for 150%.
