Two levels of standard-sized containers, with one container loading lifter for each level.

So ... the 747 uses approximately 33% more fuel to carry the same amount of freight the EXACT same distance.

I guess that says it all ... that, and as someone else said, more engines increases the chance that you'll have an engine problem preventing departure.
Mayday,

Was that 747 a -100 series?

Probably. A100 carries about the same wt PVG-ANC as the MD. A 200 carries roughly 50k more than a 100 over the same stage length. At most freight carriers flying classics, they don't mind a tech stop in, say, Chitose to max weight cape. Flown this way, a 100 will carry, if memory serves, about 240. For what we and Fedex carry, time is a tad more critical as some earlier explained, so the volume of the whale isn't so important. YMMV

I love words like "About", Almost, and "Appoximately" Mark we "sort of" know in this business that we "kinda" bulk out before anything. Next time ask them how much Cu. Ft. they have Aircraft that are paid for going back to the 1980's doesn't hurt either.

In the overnight freight business we get paid for weight, not bulk? Maybe I'm missing your point?

And to answer PastV1's question ... I'm not sure how to tell a 747-100 from a 747-200 from the outside? And I was once a 747 s/o for a carrier that had both! Before I get a lecture about counting the upper deck windows (many 747-100's only have 3 upper deck windows) some 747-100's (UAL for example) had more than 3 upper deck windows.

Actually the APC info says UPS has both 747-100's and 747-200's ... since (I think?) one of the APC guys is a UPS bubba, I assume that's a fact? Any UPS buubas want to pipe in with the facts (Yes ... I know UPS is also getting 747-400's and I know how to identify them. Just curious though ... how come the 747-400 freighter has the "shorter" upper deck).

Ah, that's why they weigh my boxes when I go to Kinkos.

My guess is to save weight on the freighter, since we don't carry any boxes up there (although an airline once tried, not us though).
