Ultra,

The poop is you'll be back this Fall along with newbies. This info came from a management type that I flew with yesterday. Please remember it was ABX that furloughed you and not 1224. Hope to see ya soon!

Oh yea its very clear who put me on permanant vacation....I'm just saying that this group (1224) seems to be very aggressive about not letting management short staff the flying folks, and was wondering if this was worth the trouble or just rumors.
By the way when does fall start????

Default if it were up to me, i'd have you here tomorrow....

ultra;
i'm sorry for your furlough and anguish.

i can't tell you what is going on in ILN, because it doesn't appear that anyone knows. i know that over in japan, most first officers are here earlier than scheduled, between 4-6 days, and have not flown what they were scheduled. all that means is that it is costing the company a lot of extra money. the captains here in japan are saying it is pretty much the same in their seat, maybe not as bad.

the company did start a dc-9 captain class last week, that took 7 b767 first officers off the line. the company admitted that they need to "realign" crew members but have come short of saying there is a crew shortage.

heard third hand that some flights in ILN were canceled or re-routed to cover shortages of crews. the COF looks bloated.

i truly hope to see you on the property sooner versus later, and before the Fall.

Is scheduling sending them over there early? By not flying "what they were scheduled", do you mean the trips are changed/rearranged from the bid packs?

Default yes to all......

yes to all of the above.
they consider themselves junior-manned to be in osaka early. in addition, under the present contract, if they fly other than their scheduled trip, then there is more compensation involved. in the last week there has been at least one "junior man" trip in osaka where at least one other first officer was available. therefore, at least two or more first officers are eligible for comensation for the same trip.
this is what is frustrating. there are guys like ultradrvr at home and yet the company is relying on "deep pockets" to pay the understaffed crewmembers for overtime or emergency callout (junior-manned in abx parlance) assignments.

The DC9 F/O seat is not short--yet. The shortages are in the 767 CA, 767 FO and DC9 CA seats.

They are training 767 crews faster than previously possible as they've now added the ability to do sim training in DEN with UAL sims and contract instructors. They're more DC9 CA classes to come but they had "too many" 767 FO's bid the last class and they can't afford to lose them until they've had time to train more new 767 FOs.

The September bid package shows 113 DC9 Captains (with 8 more in training) and 139 DC9 F/Os so you can see that they still have a little ways to go before they'll be in panic mode on DC9 F/Os. Shouldn't be too much longer, though.

In the mean time, there really isn't much that the union can do about the junior manning. The e-board has made addressing the issue a high priority in contact negotiations but, for now, we're stuck with the current contract which doesn't give us many options.

As a mid level seniority 767 Captain I got junior manned 3 weeks in advance for an August trip.
The words Osaka and contract don't appear to belong in the same sentence. I was pulled off my June/July schedule and sent to Japan and was only paid 7 dollars and hour per flight hour difference. Hopefully I'll be able to resolve days off, change of destination etc. compensation before I retire/die.

Angry lipstick on a pig....

anyone notice a line buried in the middle of the 2 quarter statement from ABX?
"ABX Air continues to deliver the highest quality air service to DHL," said Hete. "We continue to adjust staffing levels to match package volumes. "

what a clever twist of words. abx's flights are continually cut from the dhl system, which would prompt abx management to cut their pilot staff- hence ultra's dilemma.
however, they have negotiated the ana charter for 2 years now, and "didn't foresee the need for more b767 crews to staff this charter." in addition, we still hear of many charter opportunities lost out of miami because of lack of crews or the company chose not to pursue them.

hunker down and pass the ammo- VOTE NO IF NO RETRO!

Default Oh Look! A New Proffer!

abx just posted a new proffer for one whole b767 first officer in MIA domicile. that will get the wheels rolling on new charters, huh?

hang in there ultra, something will shake loose soon, and i hope it is in your favor.

remember teamsters, VOTE NO IF NO RETRO!
