I've seen a guy use skype on his iphone when I was in Shanghai. He was calling his wife in the US, however his iphone was "unlocked" or whatever the term is...
He said it sounded like a regular phone call... I'm hoping that the new iPhone that's coming out later this year will be able to download third party software such as skype...

iPhone version 2.0
The new 2.0 software, which will be available in June, will run any 3rd party app that meets with Apple's approval. Approved 3rd party apps will be distributed by Apple via the soon-to-be-opened iPhone App Store.
The upgrade to the 2.0 software will be free to all iPhone owners so no need to purchase the new model, unless of course you want 3G, GPS and whatever other surprises Apple unveils.
I believe I read somewhere that Skype was already testing the iPhone version so they would be ready to roll on day 1 of the upgrade....but it is actually available now as a Safari-based application. http://www.macdailynews.com/index.ph...omments/14566/

WiFi will be the only way to use Skype when outside the US. Unless IPhone will have Skype but only when a phone connection is established - in effect requiring an international subscription plan...
That would make Skype worthless overseas because you'd be paying for international call charges anytime you'd be connecting through Skype...
If Skype works through WiFi I’ll switch from Treo to iPhone yesterday…

The rumor I heard was Apple, in their typical vague and cryptic way, alluded they would not block a Skype stand-alone (not Safari-based) application for the iPhone 2.0 software. This stand-alone app would obviously work via WiFi and therefore negate the need for the IM+ workaround. I guess we'll find out soon...rumor has an announcement and unveiling coming within a couple of weeks.
Lots of iPhone rumor mongering can be found here...
