Depends on your needs
Undoubtedly, the iPhone wins with the UI and cool factor. Very simple, very slick. Tunes, web, visual voicemail, beautiful resolution and a phone.
However, if you are more of a power user/geek, it is a downgrade from what is already on the market in terms of PDA phones, and some smartphones.
What it does, it does very well, but for what it lacks I am not willing to give up.
1) No 3G (it operates on AT&T's EDGE network) like comparing broadband (3G) to dialup speeds
2) You are locked to AT&T - no swapping SIM cards between phones for anything other than voice only. So, if you have/had a previous data-capable phone and want to use it occasionally (like leave the iPhone at home when kayaking, at the beach, fishing.....etc) you will have voice-only capability. iPhone data plan is permanently tied only to iPhone.
3) No third party applications = No SlingPlayer (major deal killer for me) or any other application that you care to install for your own customization. There are *loads* of outstanding apps can never be installed in the iPhone.
4) Bluetooth has been crippled by Apple. Which means you can only use an earphone. No file transfering whatsoever, no use of stereo earphones for music.
5) No A2DP support (for stereo bluetooth)
6) No simple drag and drop for moving files, music, videos, etc. Gotta use the proprietary iTunes to sync the d@*n thing anytime you want to add anything.
7) Battery. Good and bad reports on longevity. A bigger issue is that it is not removable. So... if you have a problem with the battery, or even should require a hard reset, the device must be sent to Apple and you are without the phone.
As is, not a $600 tool to me... YMMV
