I'm 3 for 3 so far with the recs and the person getting hired. the person I recommended a while back finally interviewed last week, got the whiz quizz/job offer this week for a July 31st class.
All three of the people I had known well for many years and had personally flown with them for many hours.
It is true that in years past it seemed like you needed a rec to even get an interview, obviously that has changed.

I dont really know. I think it depends on what they are looking for wrt upcoming classes. When I was hired the procedure was to take everyone whom passed the interview and toss them into the pool, then call at a later date when they wanted you. Many things have changed since then and of course they need bodies yesterday to crew the MD in ANC.

Remember as well that not all recs are created equal. I had two very senior line pilots decline to put one in for me because of their history with UPS. They said they had stirred the pot too much in their careers and where afraid it would hurt me. I appreciated that. In the end I had two recs, a new hire and a 12 year captain. The captain is now 5/5 in getting people hired. My rec from him was talked about in my interview. I have a feeling that it looks good when guys continually put forward good applicants.
This could all be wrong though.

Also, reputation does matter, so does a professionally written LOR. Help out the person writing it by sending them a current resume, etc. I always share my rec with the person so they know what I said. It takes me 45min to 1 hour to do the rec. Running a good record though.
A new hire LOR is highly rated. Especially when hired by the current HR cadre. I always recommend to my mentored new hires to think carefully who they recommend. They are building there reputation with HR. Quality candidate gives one more credibility and helps future candidates.
All this is just my opinion. But I have talked to HR folks and tracked the numbers, etc.

But you are correct to prove that HR knows it takes awhile to do well, thus the mere fact you have done the routine means almost as much as what you write.

It took me about 4 hours and when I finally hit the submit button guess what? yup I was kicked off line and all that work was lost I just exploded and almost threw my computer out the window, but I was otherwise unscathed thanks to my sponser "ooops I sh!t my pants" undergarments.
I went back and did it all over again and now I think I may have free beer for life anytime I go to ANC
