Jetjok - "China is right next door, and there are some fantastic places to live there, although I don't know about the rules for someone who is working out of Hong Kong, not a resident of China, living within China."
Jetjok and everyone else, I'd think long and hard before moving into China. Their economic system may be becoming capitalistic, but their legal system is still rooted in communism- that is, you are guilty of any legal infraction that the local authorities decide to charge you with, until you can prove your innocence.
Unless you are fluent in Cantonese, you can count on any legal dispute you might have, from your driver having a fender-bender (you'd be crazy to drive yourself there), to a dispute with your landlord over rent, being decided in the local's favor. You will be the one charged by the police.
Yeah, I know we have a couple of guys who live in Shanghai, but I understand they don't have families there, and they're hanging it out there, should anything go wrong.
Having lived in France for a couple of years as an air force brat, and in Japan later in life with the family, I can tell that living in Paris or Hong Kong could be a fantastic experience for the wife and kids, if they have the right adventurous attitudes about living in a foreign country.
Livng inside China? No thanks, count me out!

Ha, you'd be surprised, HKG is the venue for all of the equestrian events for the Beijing '08 Olympics! There will be some pretty nice digs available post Olympics, plus HKG already has a VERY active horse community. Ever been to the track there? The Jockey club is right in Kowloon.
With that said, I had a horse steak in Milan once! Delicious!

Here's a curve ball for y'all to mull over. S'pose nobody bids HKG or Guongzhou (sp?) and they start filling it in reverse seniority order. What happens to a drilling mil. reservist who gets the reverse mandatory move to China? It seems not too long ago, not too far south of HKG, a Navy Ares crew was held captive for 3 plus weeks just for showing up in Mainland.
I know it's a stretch, but would there be provisions for this kinda thing? He!!, I'd be paranoid just passin' THRU China carrying a mil ID card, let alone having to live there.
So in a sense, FDX would be forcing the individual to quit the mil gig, or commute from stateside.
Anyone?
