I'm guessing that's 25K per child!!?? WOW!! Where did you get that figure? Guess we'll be staying stateside until my brood gets out of the house.

I roomed with a guy in college who grew up in Hong Kong and Singapore. Enjoyed it, but as I recall, his Dad was some type of business exec. Must have had a sweet expat COLA. I just don't see FDX opening their wallets too far. Not that they need to. There will probably be folks just chomping at that bit if no "chillins" are involved.

China is right next door, and there are some fantastic places to live there, although I don't know about the rules for someone who is working out of Hong Kong, not a resident of China, living within China. As well, there are many other countries that are relatively close, that it would be exciting to live in, as well as very inexpensive. The driving force to living outside of the domicile would be the flying schedule that you'd have to work with. Some of the guys based in SFS live far away, including here in the States, and commute to work. I'd not recommend that, but I bet it would be easier to get to Hong Kong from the U.S. than it would be to get to Subic Bay. As an example, Continental Airlines flies direct to HKG. Hell, it's easier to get to Hong Kong than it is to get to Memphis, AND, they speak better english in Hong Kong.

Jetjok, good info.

And if you enroll your kid in an international school in Paris, they will receive not only a US degree , but an international bachelor that will open them doors to all the European universities. Unique lifeworthy experience in top-rated universities at the fraction of what it costs to go to college back in the USA.

You know, home-schooling is an option. We're doing it in Lower Alabama because the schools are so pitiful....

If I were younger and had kids in school, and a wife that wasn't attached by an umbilical cord to the shops in our town, I'd go to Paris or Hong Kong in a New York minute. There are life experiences that cannot be taught in these places, experiences that will help the kids gain an appreciation for life outside of the U.S., or g_d forbid, Memphis. Even if no COLA was offered, I'd somehow make due. In my opinion, it would be well worth it. Again, imho.

I'm actually looking to see if I can crunch the numbers to make it happen. If we sold our place here and add it to what we still have left from selling our CO house, we'd have well over 7 digits to buy a place - NO PAYMENTs. Between getting rid of my mortgage and the $2700 (rumor), I could save over $200K in 3 yrs. Hmm, if we could just find a reasonable stable for our horses!
