Thanks for the reply. Is per deim earned while on R2/R3 reserve or only while on a trip?
Also I was curious how the layovers are as far as food options go? I'm big on meal prep and eating healthy do crews eat out all the time or do the schuedlues allow for brining/cooking your own food?
thanks.

perdiem sitting reserve unless you are assigned a trip. As we hired more
regional pilots, I saw more new hires schlepping food with them.
There really are no cooking facilities at the hotels we stay at except microwaves.
Most crewmembers just grab a sandwich in the afternoon on day trips. Longer layovers
you can always wander around and find a grocery store and be creative, or head out for
some suds and grub.

Hotel is ok. I got stuck in one without a kitchenette, but I hear they try to stick you in a hotel with one.
Food options are terrible, even with a car. God the food in Wilmington is terrible. There's an Aldi's next to the hotels, Walmart/Kroger over a mile away.
Drive if you can! Having a car here makes life a whole lot easier.

When I was in initial training, I rented a car for the three-ish weeks I was there, largely because back then, we weren't getting hotel and per diem. I spent most of December in a small, poorly-heated room. The price was not outrageous at the time. Don't know what it might be like today.

Do line holders have the option with years of senority to pick day trips or out and backs or is it just random? My goal would be to eventually limit the backside of the clock flying once I get older for better health and sleep.

I got a pretty good laugh out of this one. If you want day flying/better health/sleep...and a jet way, you need to re-set your sights on another segment of the airline industry. At ABX, and I believe this will go well with other ACMI groups, you will not get day-only flying. Regardless of seniority. The flying is spread among various lines of time, and that type of work is never guaranteed. It's inevitable that you will fly some back-side of the clock and at times across more time zones than one cares to count.

Still happens when someone sitting reserve in domicile wants to fly/build time or just get perdiem, and a local pilot who does not care about perdiem or building hours and would rather stay home. No more or less pay for anyone. As long as the flight is covered, the company is happy. People give up trips all the time. Especially the local guys.
Thanks

you are trying to build time or get out of being stuck in
a hotel or crash pad and volunteer to work someones trips, that's
to your advantage not the company's. The only way you get paid extra
is bidding OT on your days off or actually working your assigned days and
Happen to go over 65 hrs.
