This is the biggest bull crap, management-like mantra, self-centered, leadership-lacking statement that I've ever heard. Everything in life is Voluntary! Even taxes. Everything is a choice! Just because I don't quit every time I don't like something, it doesn't mean that I have to pretend that it's acceptable just because I voluntarily stay there.
By your logic, nobody need exercise any good leadership, because everybody volunteered to be there and that's his or her problem. I'm sure glad I never worked for you, 'cause I've had bosses with that mentality and they're the worst.

Reread this thread at least half the guys thought the email was appropriate and provided good leadership. The other half had their feelings hurt. The chief pilot dared to say what he thinks the problems are. I guess he assumed pilot were professional and self motivated. Big mistake.
Don’t get me wrong, everyone is allowed to bit*h. I certainly do my share. But everyone includes the SCP. It also includes me, on this thread, when I hear about sacrifices working here at fedex. There I go with my management stooge speak again.

I don't know why pilots here get so wound up when SCP's, RCP's or ACP's (or any of the other legion of cubicle commandos) send out these communiqués. In my experience here, so little of whatever it is they do impacts our daily lives and operations. Show up on time, move the machine, go home. So far it's pretty simple. There are always those that love change for the sake of change (just look at our training programs) and there will always be pilots that feel the need to express their own self-importance to the rest of the crew force. In all honesty I don't read most of the missives they put out. It doesn't apply to the guys that simply just want to get through this. I'm not here to win any popularity contests, especially with the guys working at Democrat that keep regular hours. What they say in an email usually has very little impact. But then again, I just follow the rules.
This new guy can send out all the email he'd like. The bottom line is that the contract and the FAR's dictate how we move the freight, little else.

My feelings weren't hurt. I agree with the others though, who seem to disagree that the source of our "problems" lies with the appearance of the crew force at 3 am.
No mention of accidents or training issues, just man you guys look like shiat you better get squared away.
Misses the mark in my opinion.
And I don't volunteer to be here, they PAY me to be here. Professional has to go both ways, not just up.

In general, I don't think I have a problem with the intent of the "O"-Gram. That said, I do have a problem with this:
I want you guys to look professional.
I want you guys to act professionally.
I want you guys to save gas ...
Isn't that a DIRECT contradiction with:
We will go on ... with or without you!
Was it just me or was Fred telling all of us that he doesn't appreciate the professional job that ALL of us do EVERYDAY? In fact, he sent a personally signed letter to my home with that message. It was Christmas time on red paper, so I put it on my fireplace mantle with the rest of the Xmas cards. It was nice of him to remember me on Xmas. :-(
Just food for thought ...
Regards,
Mark

I read the O-Gram... said huh? and deleted it like so many other mass emails I get. Unless an email begins with MY NAME at the top, i.e. actually address to me, I don't pay much attention to what it says. In fact the only reason I read this O-gram, vice just glancing over it for areas of interest, was because it was his first. The next O-gram I get I will merely peruse for meat and delete. Blah Blah Blah Hiring, Blah blah blah MOAB Bid, Blah Blah Blah no new domicile in my home town!

I think that you have to give any newbie a chance to get his feathers wet. The SCP job has to have a pretty good learning curve and it's up to him to establish both the tone and the direction. Having said that I'm not very impressed with his first communication. There wasn't one positive word in the whole thing. It'll be interesting to see what the next couple look and sound like. I get the feeling that stuff like hats may become an issue. I sure hope not.
