FDX will hire when they need to...not a day sooner. With the uncertainty of the Age 65 Rule and the steady movement of over 60 guys to the back seats of the 27 and 10's, we won't NEED to hire for quite a while. As previously stated, the history of the company's success at getting guys to accept draft trips, hawk open time and sell back their vacations...we won't NEED to hire for a while. S*cks if you're waiting for a class date, interview or a M&G but, no place better to be. Wish I could sugar coat it but, realistically it could be quite a while until we crank up the hiring machinery again.

Does anyone know for sure if a good percentage of 60+ guys are currently moving to the SO seat? Listening to the FAA it sounds like at the very best it'll take 2 years for the rule to start and another 2 years for it to be fully implemented. For guys turning 60 this year they are taking almost a 50% paycut (going off of APC #s) for a chance to be Capt again for maybe a year or two but probably not even that. I do realize that 50% of what they are making is still probably at least 100k but I'd be surprised that a significant number of people that are 59 or just turning 60 would hang around. Is there some kind of retirement advantage that I'm missing??

Just curious (and hoping that this thread's title proves to be wrong )

This is an interesting rumor, but I wouldn't get too excited about it at the moment. Just last week the rumors from the ACP offices were that FDX still wanted to hire 300 guys this year. I know that we all live and die by rumors each day but until we hear something official I wouldn't automatically chalk this one up as official. Some guys on here make good arguments about the 60+ guys going to the back of the slaveship and the -10 (even though they'll never get back to the left seat) as a reason for not hiring, but others make good points about fleet expansion and retirements. We're getting one bus a month until 2009, and someone has to fly them. My bets are that this rumor won't hold up.

Good points, but while nothing is for certain until it does or doesn't happen, I'm betting that the 'New pilot hiring is unknown at this time but is expected to be minimal,' doesn't equate to 300 new hires. Also seems pretty clear that they were referring to FY 08 not 07 as has been assumed/rumored.
Throw in the union's FYI public service announcement that they feel we are pretty well staffed, and it seems like this rumor has some legs to it. All within a few months of signing a new contract.....my, my.

Fedex runs their fiscal year from June - May. This coming June would be the start of FISCAL year 08, and much more likely to be when the next training would start.

Hiring will continue once the new bid is sorted out. Let the bean counters do their work and continue to hold, 10 mile legs approved........
There is no way this company can stay properly staffed with the airframes scheduled to come on the property. Age 60 ain't gonna happen for a few more years if at all.
Stay positive swimmers and wanna-be's.............
