FRANKFURT (AFX) - Deutsche Post AG's DHL unit is planning to open a chain of retail outlets in the US in order to compete more effectively with its rivals there, the Financial Times reported citing DHL's vice-president of commercial operations, John Pearson.
United Parcel Service Inc and Fedex Corp both operate US retail outlets where they receive packages and offer a range of other services.
'We are in the process of mapping out where we need to be and what is realistic,' Pearson told the newspaper.
He declined to state the size of the investment planned, but said DHL could ultimately open thousands of US-based stores.
Pearson said DHL will likely decide upon its formal strategy for entering the US retail market by the end of this year.
