Manners are not normally demonstrated by trading insults. There has been a lot of information in this thread that the OP should find useful. There has also been a little humor, no harm done, but abuse isn't really the theme here.
Sorry you are not feeling well, would you care to share your experience in Anchorage with us? After all, we haven't made any jokes about dog lovers yet.
It's fairly normal for pilots to show a little pride in their selected domicile and at the same time tell jokes about how bad it is to try to warn their seniors off. I think it's fairly obvious a lot of these people love ANC, but it's not for everyone. Lots of choices and different preferences. To each his own.

My 3YR ANC experience
To finally answer the question of WHY anyone would want to live in Anchorage let me reply. I was stationed there for three years flying C-130s. I am originally from Florida and decided to experience the mountains. I was mystified with the scenery when I arrived and sad when I left. Alaska is the last frontier. The land is beautiful and I'm glad to say it's not the bible belt (the south were I'm presently stuck). There is no state tax and no sales tax in Anchorage. The cost of living is reasonable. Housing is a little on the pricey side. I bought a 3BD/2BA 2car GA for 190K and sold it for 250K. My friends that still live there say that the prices are now falling due to overbuilding. Never the less, if I get the chance I will either go FEDEX/UPS out of ANC. I loved it and my wife loved it. I might not be able to have the gigantic house of nowhere America but in Alaska I felt at home (Florida Boy). The food is great and there are a lot of micro brews in the area. I guess I'm pro ANC but if you really want to know more write me and I can tell you some more great stories. Now I must go back to building my PIC time for ANC.

T1-A. Thank you. Now ****. If you EVER want to bid and hold ANC you need to remind everyone about mosquitos, ugly women, crack heads, broken windshields, and break-up.
NW Florida has ticks. Alaska is a dump. Both have terrible schools and your wife would hate them.
Get it?
