FDX 2007 Hiring Rumors
#51
I hear the responses to fed up, but if you don't know someone from your past flying experiences that has moved on to "livin the dream", how can you have an equal pop at getting in? Not that it's the pilots fault at how management dictates hiring based on a buddy-buddy system, but I must admit my own frustration is also at the boiling point of how to crack a system where you have to have flown with someone. I mean doesn't that really narrow the scope of, and borderline discrimination for the average Joe? Maybe we (not "livin the dream") need to start pitching tents outside ops just to meet a fellow pilot on the road we can get to know.

Agreed. It's not just "a rec" that counts - the quality of the rec counts as well. Someone who has known and flown with someone for 10 years can write a very strong rec that carries a lot of weight. A weak rec is almost worse than none at all.
Really push the networking thing - you probably know more guys at FedEx or UPS than you thought. If not, find someone you know who just got hired and go fly with him so he can write you a rec in the future.

Recommendations
I have flown with my sponsor, and yes, he is high up in the chain of command. I have no problem doing whatever it takes to get a recommendation to fill the last two spots(within reason) I understand it has to be someone who can vouch for character, etc. but how else do you expect to meet new people? Yes there are thousands of applicants but I have been trying for years. (only 1 year with my sponsor) Prior to that I had someone who did nothing to help for about 8 years! How misleading! Live and learn and make sure people are doing what they say they are doing. Best of luck to all and if anyone wants to help and take action, let me know. Thanks!

I have tried this with someone that is a captain at the aforementioned company only to be told "I really can't do that" which I translate to "I don't have time, nor do I want to" ME ME ME..... Let's not forget we should try to help each other out, isn't that how we all got to where we are anyway, or was it all because of ourselves?

Why would they not want you at their current company? Are they worried I would take something away from them? And if it's a question of integrity, honesty, work ethic, aeronautical knowledge, accountability or anything else along these lines, why not take the time to get to know that person on a personal basis as I am willing to do with anyone willing to help. I know personally for me, my record speaks for itself, and I have ample references willing to vouch for my character. I only hope and look forward to the day I could be a mentor to someone one day that is in my position and others like me.

Cool your jets. It has nothing to do with integrity, work ethic or knowledge. It has everything to do with the person being a tool.
I don't know anyone in this thread personally, so save your spears (I'm not talking about you!) Having said that, there are certain people (you know who they are) that you fly with in one job that you never want to even SEE again, much less fly with. These are the people that (hopefully) will get filtered out during the recommendation process.
Now if someone is trying to find one or even two people at FedEx that they even know, much less have flown with, that is a networking problem. The other guy (most likely a military type) coming from a squadron that has 10 guys at FedEx but can't coax a rec out of any of them - that is the true problem child.
Two different problems. The guy with the networking problem can work (over time) to overcome it. The guy who is the tool will never STOP being a tool, and has pretty much sealed his fate.

1. You must have flown with the person to give a recommendation that is worth anything. It sounds like you are asking someone you barely know.
2. Each pilot can only have 3 active recommendations, and you may not be in his top three.
