FDX 2007 Hiring Rumors

Even if no one retires, we are still getting a net increase (deliveries minus DC10s pulled for conversion) of 21 widebodies this calendar year and close to that next year. 757s start showing up in Jan, and once the the 100s (only 8 left) go this spring, there are no plans to get rid of any 727-200s anytime soon. Widebodies are crewed at 14-15 pilots per plane, so even discounting retirements and 757s, we will still need 5-600 new pilots in the next 2 years. Age 65 won't affect that. A global recession, maybe, but not someone staying past 60 sometime 2-3 years down the road when it takes affect. Your post was either a jest, or a misinformed knee-jerk reaction to an upcoming policy change you apparently don't like.
Well, I realize that humor and sarcasm are much more difficult to detect in the written word than in person. However, if you think that I believed that they were actually told that they were the last new-hire class for 5 years, then there is a cognitive problem there. Yes, growth causes people to be hired just like retirements. But it is an irrefutable fact that an age change to 65 takes money out of my pocket, and puts it into somebody else's.

I wasn't worried that newhires were told that, but that you might actually believe it, yourself.
You asked for an explanation. There it is, both why your post was falacious (previous post) and why I thought someone could believe it.
Back to you!

If you don't think an age 60 change will slow hiring down even more than it already has you are in serious denial. Why do you think there are about 5 guys per month in the 72 and the 10 going to the back seat? You think they just want to hang around? No, most are surely hoping they will get to return to a window seat.
Sure, we will grow with our new aircraft, but we would hire more, many more, if there wasn't a chance of age 60 changing.
The slow down has already started, it will keep guys on the street longer, and there is absolutely no way to deny it.

You, Captain, are the one who is wrong.

I'll put a not so gloomy spin on the Age 65 at FDX.
When these guys hit 60 alot will have most of their sick bank full. Any sick leave buy back at this point would not be bad but it will also not have much time to grow in the retirement plan. Add that to another 72 hrs of sick leave they have each year, 36 days of vacation and I believe most will not be working much.
FDX will probably have to hire to not really replace these guys but to cover the liability the impose. Getting paid and not working working much.
Someone else might be more eloquent with this thought but you guys probably get what I mean.
