Senior FedEx/UPS schedules
#11
Not to rain on your parade, but don't you think you're putting the cart before the horse? First you have to get hired at either UPS or FedEx, then you have to survive until you're real senior. By then, who knows what the most senior lines will look like, or even if you would want to fly them, at that time. You might have met someone really nice in Brazil or Thailand, or anywhere else in the world, which would probably mean that you'd forsake the senior lines to fly to those places.
SGMTC-we've got it all here. You can be home or away as much as you want. You can rake in the bucks or not, it's up to you.

Boiler, it's a midwest job. I'm not talking $120k next year, or even the year after that. I'm talking down the road....... a long way!!! We are looking at bigger airplanes, so I'm assuming 25 years down the road flying a mid and making that kind of money. I'm looking at the long term, by no means will this happen soon!! Just trying to compare the end of my career with my current job versus a job with Brown or FedEx.
With regards to pay there's no question, but QOL, retirement, time with the family, etc. is what I'm wondering about. Mostly QOL, that's why I ask about the schedules. Retirement won't compare either. I'm home alot now and to go to an airline would be tough on kids, so I'm just wondering how it will compare in the long-term. For the first few years, it would be a big sacrifice.

Senior guys that can hold AM or PM out and backs and live in MEM, can sleep in their own bed every night - all 28-31 of them - if they so chose (or if momma allowed ).

same at UPS, there really is no "senior schedule". On the fleet I am on now for instance, many guys like to bid 12-14 day trips. Commute in once, fly and be done. Being a family guy, I could be number 1 seniority and I wouldn't bid those trips. When I was a senior first officer though, I can tell you that I had a pick from some very nice destinations with daytime flying and good layovers. Again, while I might have liked going to Honolulu, someone else might have liked going to Anchorage. One thing I have noticed at UPS however is that depending on the fleet, often there is not a great difference in the schedules, it just comes down to the days off that you need. As an illustration, when I look at my bid packages there are very very few lines that I look at and feel like I would really kill for.
I think you'll find a career at either brown or purple to be very rewarding, financially and professionally.

Yup, I figured that out.
Thanks for all of the honest replies. I know the corporate world is a big roll of the dice, just like anything else in avaition.
Just trying to compare the senior freight fellas against a good corporate job. It's all in the eye of the beholder I guess.
Thanks again.

Some guys (not me ) can be a WB Capt $250k+, hold week-on/ week off, double deadhead, day flying, in their home town. That means you work Tues, Wed, and Thurs, (maybe Fri) every other week and still sleep in your own bed.
or...
With 5 weeks VAC you can fly a 2 week around the world trip with a frequency approaching every other month. Assuming you're heathy...

Clap -- here you go.
I recently was on a trip with a very senior FO who was hired in '95. At the 12 yr point he's still between number 30 - 50 on the MEM FO list. He could be a WB Capt at around the 80% point making a lot more $$$ and getting a VTO/secondary line. Our trip had 2 days in HNL, 2 in SYD, 2 in Subic, then we split off. They went to SIN for a couple of days before back through Subic, KIX then MEM. I went to TPE then ANC before DH'ing to MEM.
Currently, at the 7 yr point and 5 yrs in the Maddog, I'm at 40% and was hired before the postal contract wave in Sept of '01. I would say it takes about 6-8 yrs currently at this pace to get to where I am on the MD. If I was a bus driver, I'd be at less seniority -- around 55-60% in MEM.
I usually get one of my top 10 choices but I don't choose the STN lines or the VCP lines because I can't touch them due of training bumps and the friendly South American girls, respectfully. I also cannot get the peachy DH's to DXB, HKG, SIN, and KIX as well as the DH's and long layovers in HNL. It takes a 1 or 2-digit seniority number (number 1-99 on the MEM list) to get those good deals and really, that's about at the 10 yr point and greater.
It all sounds really good but it's a big wheel that turns pretty slow and takes a while to get there. Now that I'm there, even at 40% seniority, I'm not giving it up anytime soon because the QOL is pretty good. I get a good vacation selection, training selection, bid selection and I'm just at 40% and 7 yrs.

We used to have that deal and it was SWEEEEEEEEET. Then a contract or two back we changed it to where the lines that those training captains get are not available for FO's to bid. Raw deal but I guess we must have gotten something in return. Anyway, this is managable because our FO bids close two days after our captain's bids do.
