It's just another discriminator HR uses to narrow the field of candidates based on the supply and demand of pilots. Right now for a legacy carrier you need one but when they start cancelling flights for lack of crews it'll go away.

I actually started it through ERAU but my daughter was born 2 months ago, so It is now on hold. I think I can possibly manage the time, but just wanted to know if its worth the debt. I do not make enough to pay out of pocket.
