Purple Drank opines

Airlines, and union leadership hasn't and still isn't helping the state of the industry and profession in the U.S. Just my opinion as based on my observations over my 40 years in the business.

I mean come on... ALPA taking on the battle of Medical Reform? How's about 117 rules?

Another suggestion... lobby your management to design a product that can compete with carriers you feel a threat to your future.
Correct, unions have overseen the decline, and the decline is based on the value of the product. Marketing and constructing the product is the way to make money. Trying to foist off a low value product at the high end is going to lose money.

Unions just aren't a factor, they could not prevent the decline of aviation pay, and they can't find a better contract in less than four years if ever.
It isn't about unions, it is about a competitive product on the high and low end.
You are absolutely right...Unions are almost useless and are not a factor in major decisions...Managements at the Legacies don't want to spend money to improve the product so they can compete with elite International Carriers...Like the Qatar CEO said about Delta, they fly crap airplanes, the statement is not far from the truth...I mean, you are making billions in profits and you can't replace those nasty MD-88's...Really, they are just nasty airplanes which should have retired many years ago or sold to third world airlines a long time ago...

Negative! The fearless leaders could have negotiated the pay cuts as loans to the company with paybacks. Further, retirement benefits could have been frozen, rather than terminated. Medical benefits? Well the non-brainwashed can figure this one out for themselves.

Those days remind me of the "Pied Piper". Everyone is working one pay increases... great... how's about reimbursement and restoration of benefits to get back to where you were?

I don't know anything about the middle eastern airlines other than a few guys I have talked to and they all can't wait to leave. It's their golden handcuffs. They
make too much money to go back to an RJ, but they wish they could.

I do know a lot about the Middle East because I have spend a lot of time in Qatar and the Emirates. I hate everything about those countries. The people look down on Americans and they treat people from other countries worse. They have a form of slavery to get all their work done. They say they are our allies and then they give money to ISIS. I was always worried about my safety when I was on the economy in those places.

If you are single it might be an adventure, but I wouldn't even consider bringing a wife and kids over there.

Americans and Westerners are treated like royalty in Qatar and the U.A.E...We are not talking about SYRIA here...Most wives love it here and so do their kids because they get to make very good friends with wives and families of other pilots who also relocated to the region from all corners of the World..The social life for families is excellent living in this region..The kids attend very good schools and diversity in those schools is like diversity in the United Nations...I understand some people don't like diversity so they will never like the region...to each his own but to say such things is very far from the truth..If you are a person who likes places like Alabama and don't care for the outside World then the Middle East is not for you...

Glad your experience has been so good. Just a question though have you gone outside of your compound? Have you seen how the soccer stadiums are being built in Doha? Have you talked to any of the people actually from those countries? The ones that never have to work and get a house provided by the government. Those are the people who look down on you because you aren't royalty. The servants that are provided you from the government are probably from another country. Find out what they are paid. Thats when you will realize you are the one who likes Alabama. That's 1850s Alabama though.

Well I spoke to many laborers doing construction here and they say they work hard and earn $500 U.S Dollars a month plus an apartment to share with many other guys....Now, a new regional airline pilot in America makes a $1,000 Dollars a month after taxes and has to get a crashpad and car so that leaves him with the exact same amount as the laborer in Qatar...lol...See my point...What just happened
here?

I agree the regionals pay slave wages. Luckily they are having trouble staffing so maybe the wages will start improving. As long as AFA doesn't get congress to remove the 1500 hour rule I think it will get better.

In the long run, ME carriers will prevail on international flights in and out of the USA because our corporate controlled congress will pass Open Skies. The US legacy international flying will slow to a trickle. Get used to flying from OMA to EWR to MCI and eating at Applebee's.
