I think the regional model has hurt US aviation more than foreign carriers ever could. Like others say, why won't ALPA put as much cash torwards regional pilot wages as they do fighting NAI or the ME3, the industry wouldn't have this problem.

But as many of you are aware, aviation is driven by politics, and some pilots tend to get butt hurt if you don't follow or do as they say.
I wouldn't worry about ALPA or any union hurting your chances should you decide to come back. If your goal is to work for a U.S. legacy or major, I wouldn't head over there until you have a logbook full of TPIC. Also, why waste a step by going overseas? If not for 'adventure' or 'other experience', you are practically most likely just delaying reaching your end goal.

There are many pilots at the ME3 that got hired back at the U.S Majors, many...I personally know a few who got hired at Delta and United recently, some decided not to leave to DAL/UAL, others went back...

ALPA is a huge joke run by morons...I wouldn't pay any attention to them...They are similar to trailer trash...

I understand ALPAs view on the ME3, and how much they lobby against the ME3 expanding.

Thoughts on this?
Go for it... I've been back and forth since 1992... No issues. May come back later this year, as I have an interview with a legacy carrier.

You would be working for a company--pretty much working for a country--that is ignoring its international obligations in an attempt to utterly destroy the US airline industry.

you do the math.
Airlines, and union leadership hasn't and still isn't helping the state of the industry and profession in the U.S. Just my opinion as based on my observations over my 40 years in the business.

I mean come on... ALPA taking on the battle of Medical Reform? How's about 117 rules?

Another suggestion... lobby your management to design a product that can compete with carriers you feel a threat to your future.

Just do us all a favor. When you decide to leave there, give them fifteen minutes notice. Preferably before a ramadan flight to the big rock.

How much TPIC do you have now? Compare your future resume if you stay or if you leave.

I'd focus on upgrading. Get 1000 hrs TPIC and reevaluate the battlefield. The overseas jobs will still be available.

You need to decide if you would like to live there. I enjoy visiting once in a while, but would have no desire to live in the UAE full time.

If money wasn't a factor, you could look at places like Kalitta or Atlas. That would take you places you haven't been and diversify your resume.

Having said all that, have you done everything at your current employer to boost your resume i.e. Check airman, etc?

I wouldn't do it.

I have heard nothing but horrible stories about those carriers and the deceptive, crappy way they treat pilots. You work your ass off, and at least two of the carriers I know have lied to friends about important work and compensation issues.

I would never work for anyone in that whole region of the world. They are not my cup of tea. I prefer people who practice business fairly.

Thread title could really use a question mark. I thought this was going to be an intriguing story.

True. It's like the mantra in the late 90's-2000 that anybody that did PFT at (insert regional here) will or has harmed their career. Ha ha.......

Wait, you talking about being a new hire on reserve at a U.S. legacy that STILL can't staff?

Whatever the OP decides is best for him is the proper bet. Hard to say how things will shake out, but wide body command with international experience will always be marketable.

Unions just aren't a factor, they could not prevent the decline of aviation pay, and they can't find a better contract in less than four years if ever.
It isn't about unions, it is about a competitive product on the high and low end.
