Director of flight safety or Regional FO
Quick question for the experts opinions...
Would taking a position at an aviation college as Director of Flight Safety be a good career choice if I eventually want to go to a major or should I continue at the Regionals with an upgrade about 2 years away? Ive been with my current regional for 3 years and have other 121 experience as well as 135 and flight instructor experience? What would look better and where would I be more competitive?
Thanks for any insight

The safety director job would be a nice resume bullet if you had to ride out a furlough or downturn...But given the current hiring trends, majors will be looking for people who want to be airline pilots, not college staffers.

If you want to be in a safety department at an airline, it might help. Get your masters in human factors or safety management/risk management. Go to Infoshare, and meet all of the safety people at the airlines. After you know people, go to a regional and get flight experience. If you can, try to get into the safety side at the regional level, and network with the major that you want to work for.
The above is one possible path, but there are others. My safety experience and the connections I made at InfoShare are what got me on at my airline. Like anything in life, it's about who you know. Most anybody who meets the mins has the requisite skill to fly a jet. What sets you apart is your ability to network.
