Leave a US airline for overseas?

atr42....go take a cold shower. If it doesn`t pass by then, take another one. You have a job that a zillion guys are trying for. I`m assuming that you have a 4 yr degree. Some major will call soon. Do not do this to your family.

Agree. If you were an RJ guy at Endeavor or ExpressJet, single, and had years to go until you had the mins for the US carriers, I would say go for it. VX is a good place to be until you get a job at DAL/UAL/AMR. I worked for B6 until DAL hired me.

Typhoon Pilot probably knows the most about Middle East and China/Asia jobs, so his info is very nice.
If you live in China, for the contracts I've heard of, they will pay for just about everything, so you can save more than if you commute.
In China, the North is more polluted than the South, in general. HKG and Shenzhen probably have about the least amount of pollution. I have a friend in Shenzhen who loves it-he is married to a Chinese girl and has kids...not trying for any US flying jobs...the corporate side of Chinese aviation is booming as well as the airline side.
In the last few months China has started hiring expat FOs...for the first time ever.
Generally, the first $97?k of salary is US tax free, if you are in the US for less than 31 days in that year.
pprune.org is the best source for overseas aviation info. ************* is probably the next best source..they have a lot of foreign jobs posted on that site.
I have known several families who said that moving overseas was the best thing that has happened to them....and some who said it was horrible. I know a guy who has a great wife and job because he went to an American/Intntl High School in London.
In general, the aviation situation in Asia is growing out of control, with a desperate need for pilots that will be getting worse.
On the other hand, you may want to gamble and wait to see if a ME carrier opens up US pilot base(s). I think they will as they become more and more desperate.
Oh, the highest paying US flying jobs??? Flying UAVs and being deployed overseas.

I would also recommend spending some time on pprune. I'm retired so don't have to worry about it any more, but every time I read about how it is overseas I thank my lucky stars I didn't have to go there. Some guys love it, and it is probably mostly the guys that don't who post, but it will certainly give you the down side.

I'd do it.
If you can get a command seat, and fly there 2 or 3 contracts, whether it be two or three year terms, then make your cash, appox.
$1,000,000, from recent salaries posted, and then bail if necessary. Your child will only be 6-8 yo, bi-lingual.
Bank of China right now is paying 3.5% for savings accounts, these are the interest rates of the 80's for the US.
having compounded that money during those terms of the contracts, you may make out well, plus exchange rates may favor you with having RMB vs US $.
something to consider
