Default Should he have been pink slipped

Had a chat with a friend of mine the other day about a pink slip he got. Here was the situation:

Simulator check (a recommend ride). The sim is a "B" level box which was more for basic flying and procedures training, obviously landings cannot be "judged". Anyway, after the sim he is to head off to the actual airplane to complete his training.

He pooches up the landing after an engine failure on final. The nose wheel goes off the pavement. (not sure how they knew that....) Handled the EP well let it go left of center line and wheel goes off the paved surface.

He gets a pink slip. It is NOT under an AQP. There was no rating or certificate that was going to be issued after the sim flight, only a "good to go for the checkride portion". In fact, although a pink slip was given to him, he was told the infraction was minor and was cleared take the type ride without a recheck in the sim.

A little confused he if should have been given a pink slip in the first place..which is now on his record. I told him it sounded bogus and he should fight it.

What say you?

Why did he have to do a recommended ride?

That was my word for it.

Basically, a bunch of sim time to prep for the checkride in the actual airplane. This was for a 121 operator.

So he was pinked for failing a training session or for failing the actual ride? Or was he pinked because of a series of substandard performances? Or (as stated above), were the Feds there?
Somethings not adding up.

Something has to be missing here...

You can only "pink slip" a checkride that's for a license/rating. You can "Unsat" a sim check, but that's not the same thing. Still goes on your record, but it's not a "pink slip".

The "Pink Slip" is technically called the "Notice of Disapproval of Application". So if there was no 8710-1 application (or electronic equivalent) filled out for a new certificate/rating, there is no application to be disapproved and hence no "Pink Slip".

A "recommend ride" is, by definition, NOT an application for a certificate or rating. Your friend failed nothing of consequence.
