Are job fairs worth it for majors
#33
I will be getting out early next year and looking for post military employment. I plan to start hitting some of the job fairs this summer and really hope that some of the majors will be attending.

Haha yup! This is correct. I was there and saw at least 70% men.
In terms of attending job fairs I say, unequivocally, yes they are absolutely worth the time and money.
It shows serious initiative and the company I was after basically said, flat out, that your chances of getting an interview without having come to the WIA was close to nil.
When this company hires in 6-8 months I am very confident I will be getting a call

Going to more than one job fair is a waste of time/money. I think the first one was a waste, but I still recommend giving it a shot at least once.
The best thing to do is get the time at a regional and start making mainline contacts from day one.
My job at CAL came out of nowhere and I was not expecting it, after years or building contacts at DAL and AA.
Don't get too caught up in the path to a major, I did and wasted a lot of time worrying about it. Every pilot (100%) that I know that wanted to go to a major and kept their personal and flying records clean all have jobs at majors now. Besides building time and keeping a clean record, the most important thing to work on is making sure that you are a people friendly person and that you can start and carry on a conversation with ease. That will go a long way during the process.

I am an RJ CA and am thinking about attending the Aero Crew Solutions job fair in Chicago on May 18. The only companies I am really interested in are US Airways and Spirit. Due to my own stupidity, I missed the last application window for US Airways and don't have an application on file with them yet. Anybody have any idea what that means as far as meeting with them at the job fair? Waist of time? Or can I still get into the pile of interested candidates even if their app window isn't open?
I was also wondering, for those of you who have been to Aero Crew Solutions job fairs, is the career seminar worthwhile? I feel like I have been resting on my laurels for the last few years and have been looking at ways to get jumpstarted. Thoughts?

I am not sure about what Airways does because at the job fair I went to in ATL they didn't even take resumes. They also use a third party company to select which apps get pulled for interviews, it's an awful system really........

As far as Airways are concerned, I would imagine they would open the application window right before the ORD job fair, or shortly thereafter. They probably won't take resumes, they never do, but they'll take your email down, either to check you off as showing up or to notify you when the app window is open. I would imagine that they would then update your app with having attended the ORD job fair. It can't hurt to show up.
I attended two job fairs for Spirit, haven't heard a peep from them. I'm hoping the third time is the charm, I'm not giving up on Spirit.
That being said, I got an interview with JetBlue, and I have to say it was a direct result of attending the WAI Job Fair, so I believe it's worth it.
As far as the career seminar is concerned, I'd definitely sit through it. A lot of it is common sense, BUT, someone had to have done the stupid stuff they talk about, so being reminded about the dumb things people do during interviews is immense. Plus, Aero Crew is offering good, smart advice on social media.
Good luck, I hope to meet some good APC people there, and hope you get an interview out of attending.
Cheers!
