Internships
Hi all,
Many people have told me that one of the keys to being hired by a major airline with less flight time than what otherwise may be needed is to participate in an internship, specifically at the major "you want to retire at." Obviously college internships exist at most airlines, but are there any at the high school level?
I'm curious to know if anybody has any information, experiences, or "success stories" regarding internships with an airline.
Thanks in advance

I've never heard of a HS internship at a major (or regional). They would have so many applicants, they need to narrow the field, so they go for college students with certain progress in a flight program.

I interned at XJ (Mesaba) and I think the requirements were commercial and maybe instrument. Makes sense because I did do work that required knowledge from my training for both. Also went through crj-900 ground school. Someone without a commercial/instrument might have been able to do most of the job, as a lot was collating/paperwork, but you'd really get a lot more out of it once you have that minimum experience level.
Also a guaranteed interview, I'm still waiting for XJ to hire again.

i interned with ExpressJet, it helped me get hired at XJT and at NWA because it was something that separated me from the pack. even though it had nothing to do with NWA the interviewers were impressed on how i founded the internship program and made my own "luck" i the industry for myself etc. good luck

I did too and you only needed an instrument rating. Thats all I had... and no aviation degree. I used the gauranteed interview to get hired too. When did you do it?

Right after they got bought by Pinnacle, I have terrible timing. Now I don't know if I'll ever get to work for them.

Ouch, ya I would assume not unfortunately. Hopefully though but there are better places if you have the time. With everything going on you do not want to be involved, I left and couldnt be happier. It was great up until the Bk though.

Right...especially when I join the industry, regional airlines will be sucking in anybody eligible for an ATP. That's why I'm talking about major internships: Southwest, Delta, United, etc.

At the college level, there are all kinds of internships in aviation. I know a guy who interned at a major corporate flight department--now flies a GLEX for them. The manufacturers all have internship programs, even if not at a major, stand out resume/interview material.
