Default ME time

So I am looking to get my ME rating. Unfortunately the school I am teaching at does not have a multi engine airplane available so I dont know if there is a benefit to get my MEI. A friend has a Multi-Engine plane and would like me to be a safety pilot for him (once I have the Multi rating). I can build up some pretty decent time flying with him. Two questions-

If the time comes to apply for a job, how will they look at 50 hours multi engine PIC as a safety pilot?

OR

Should I just get my MEI and "instruct" vs. safety pilot those hours?

most now days get there Multi in 10 to 12 hours and do there MEI which gives them a total of 25 hours for a regional job. I think they may flag 50 hours of safety pilot time.

I don't think the regionals will care how you got your ME time, as long it's legally logged and you have whatever amount they require (25-50 hours, I think most are 25 these days).

SP time is legal time. Be aware that you CANNOT log the entire flight since you were not SP or required crew during taxi, T/O, or LDG when the pilot flying was not wearing a hood. Also cannot log XC of any sort (XC requires a complete flight, and again you were not required crew for all of it). Those details are what might get flagged if an interviewer doesn't care for SP time.

Of course all else being equal if they were choosing between a guy with MEI time vs. SP time, I think the MEI would win. But today they'll probably hire both of you.
