Red face Bankruptcy an airline pilot job

Hello all,

I wondering if anyone has knowledge on whether or not filing for bankruptcy will have an effect on getting hired by one of the US major airlines? I am on a position that I may have to do a chapter 13 due to some family unforeseen circumstances, it happened in the beginning of my training in which I have to complete. Just wondering if that will decrease my chances, or this something from the past? Not sure if potential pilot shortage will have an help! I haven’t filed yet but studying my options. Thanks for feedback.

Considering most of them have filed, it would be hypocritical to hold it against you.

It will probably raise a question at the interview. Answer honestly and move on. Then again it may not even come up.

A number of companies do credit checks.

You say that you're filing and you're in class right now? It shouldn't impact your present position, but could later.

It's important to understand the rationale behind looking at your credit, though. If you've filed for a bankruptcy it's not that you've filed, it's whether you're responsible with your finances. One may have collections following a medical event, and it may be viewed very differently than racking up 30,000 in unpaid entertainment purchases. It's common to have financial distress surrounding life events such as hospitalization or other emergencies, and it's common for credit issues, even bankruptcies to ensue.

Credit issues revolving around overspending or fiscal irresponsibility, however, come back to the character of the individual, and in those cases, outstanding issues on credit can have an impact on the ability to get hired.

View bankruptcy the same way; there are a number of reasons for bankruptcy, and there are a number of different types of bankruptcy, as well.

It might be a background check issue. Airlines are not looking for Hedonists who do whatever they feel like now and shirk the consequences later.

Since your situation sounds like unforeseen stuff happens (which is the intent as to why BK is allowed in the first place) you might consider pre-emptively explaining that at an interview, especially if it had to do with death or medical bills, people will be sympathetic.

You wouldn't want to highlight a BK if they weren't going to find out anyway, but I would assume most majors will look at that. Check the state law for the airline's HQ, if it prohibits considering a candidate's credit, then it might be best not mention it.

In the grand scheme, probably not a show-stopper, but might delay you a bit.
