It's obvious I don't have enough to keep me fully entertained, so I logged into the FAA website (using my real name and home address as required; inexplicably, they wouldn't accept my declarations that my name is vagabond) and did a little search. Since I needed to tell them a pilot's full name, I could only search the people I know.

Imagine my surprise and utter horror when I saw some folks, who I know damn well and good are flying for well known airlines, are listed as having no medical.

I don't have a medical. Maybe there's hope yet for me as a 777 Captain, although I will settle for a regional FO.

And I saw some people who I know damn well and good have excellent eyesight, but they are listed as "must wear corrective glasses."

What kind of a database is this!?

Now before anyone gets into a teenage hissy fit, my State's Bar Association allows ANYbody to search its database of lawyers. You could be on death row or a psychopath or a telemarketer or the Emperor of Nigeria and you, too, can search for me and find out a good address, phone number and email address with which to spam me.

What gets me, given the "mental" state of most pilots, is that they haven't gone in and asked to have their address withheld.

That can't be right. But the database lists EVERY pilot who has ever held a ticket, going back at least to the 1940's so there may be some duplicate names.

This restriction would appear for near and mid vision correction too (reading glasses)...almost every pilot over 45 will have that.


Being in a security sensitive job, it's for the best that airline pilots' home addresses can be restricted.

That's OK. They don't have my medical record on file either. This was once a real pain for DUATS (not in the database). Oh well.
