Default Loggin of PIC and SIC time in Part 121

Here's a question for all of you FAR 121 guys. Because of our recent BK filling, several guys were asking interesting questions.

The designated PIC is the PIC and logs PIC. What does the 2nd Capt log? PIC or SIC. Can the 2nd Capt log all of the time or just the time in seat? How about the FO's? Time in seat or all of the flight time? Can there only be one SIC?

Are you logging time under FAR Part 1 or Part 61? Tell me which and I'll tell you.

I found the SIC part of the answer. The second question still is open. How does the second captain assigned to a 4 man crew log his time and can he only log time while occupying a duty station?

Can't speak for the 2nd CA issue, but as a typed FO in an augmented crew, I log all time as SIC, even if I'm sitting left seat in cruise. I log all the flight time as well, as I'm required for the full duration.

This is a question I hav been asking for some years now and I still do not have a definitive answer. There was another thread on this about 2 yrs or so ago.
My answers are specific to the 742 with an F/E.


3 man crew with 2 PICs
As either PIC you can't log more than 12 hrs in a 24 hr period.
So I would say, only time in seat.

4 man crew with 2 PICs
I would only time in the seat.
I have never done a four man crew (yet) so I haven't crossed that bridge.

Employers (specifically airlines) only want to see PIC where you actually signed for the airplane. In scheduled ops, this means that CA logs PIC for the whole flight and no else logs any PIC. Again this is for employment purposes.

You can also legally log sole-manipulator PIC while in the seat, but airlines will consider it fraud if you try to count that toward their turbine PIC requirements. If you must go there, keep a separate column.

If your company has some deal where you actually sign over total responsibility to the relief before you hit the bunk, that would be a different story.

FAA legal logging is different from what employers want to see. For employers, have a means to separate out that time where you signed for the ship.
