I heard a "Giant" flight departing CVG one morning who accidentally called Tower using "Polar". Really confused the tower controller who apparently had no idea that the two call signs were the same company.

Heck, that happens all the time. First couple days a of the trip with a Qantas call sign, then next day a Giant call sign, followed by Etihad and finally Polar. Sometimes it takes a while to get into the call sign of the day. Just another week at Atlas.

Certainly don't mean to pee in anyone's Cheerios....if it works for you, that's great. However, using SSN defies the mandatory retirement/ age /seniority logic (as if there was ever any logic in the first place) in this industry.
For what it's worth, I turned down the class date.

Yep! One of my most important items in the brain bag is a bunch of notepads so I can write the "call sign of the day" and stick it on the panel in front of me.

Yeah, that's it.

It's not a big deal in a normal class size, anyway. I've worked at companies with birthdays used, numbers pulled out of a hat, and SSN (high or low being good). Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. System wide, it doesn't mean much unless you're really unlucky during a furlough.
I heard about that...did that ever get worked out? Seems like it'd be a slam dunk grievance...

CVG is the junior base; all trips start there either operating or with a deadhead. You almost always give up a day off on the front end for gateway. Lines are all hard lines of flying or R2 (hotel reserve for those unfamiliar). At least on the FO side, domestic tends to go senior. I have no trouble as a junior guy in CVG holding NRT, SYD, TPE, etc. Schedules don't change often if you're on a regular line (excellent for those of us bidding for pay).
JFK is senior, and I've heard those guys don't often give up a day off for gateway. These cats also have R1 lines (home reserve).
