That's great news. So they must be continuing the screening process again this week.... Any information as to when the interviews for this weeks successful phone / online test candidates might be, or plans for future class dates?

Congratulations! Can you tell us what your background stats are?

As far as upgrade, wouldn't it be subject to too many unknowns at this time? And any estimate now would simply be a WAG sure to be disproven by as yet unforseen circumstances. How long do you think it will take to nearly double the size of the pilot group, minus retirements? You're guess may well be as valid as anyone elses. I haven't seen very many predictions of time to upgrade in a larger organization at the time a guy is hired, that turned out to be as predicted. That said...you've got the advantage of being among the first 50 or so to be hired in this expansion. "Them's pretty nice apples....."

I have a question about the standing bid.

What are the pros and cons of the different domiciles? I will be commuting from DEN if that makes a difference.

I think a guess about upgrades is just that. The junior Captain before the last round of upgrades was 11 years. But there are a couple gaps in the last decade with no hires for two years or more. When age 65 sorts out in another couple years there will be around 30 retirements a year for the forseeable future. What happens in the next 5 or 10 years is anyone's guess.

While Atlas will ticket you to the plane and home, under some IRS rule if that ticket is to your base it counts as income and you pay tax on the value of the ticket. Same for a hotel in your base. So as a commuter I try to bid trips that start with a deadhead from my base and Atlas just buys me a ticket straight to the plane. JFK is the only current base that I've seen the bid package for and there are many lines that don't really start there. I've heard that lines for MIA, HSV and IAH are much more likely to actually start from those bases. The other thing is that under Flag rules when you get back to your base and you have been flying in a 3 or 4 man crew you get twice your flight time off. Since MIA and IAH tend to be a lot of out and backs you end up with a lot of down time in hotels or just going back and forth to your house. I try to do 17 days in a block and I've heard it's a lot easier to do that out of JFK.

That said, the Classic is still a good airplane and does make lots of money for the company...don't let 400 pukes like me tell you any different. I was on the Classic for a long time, and it is now a niche airplane for us.

None of our airline ACMI customers want it, but it is the best airplane for the USAF.

Enjoy it, and congratulations.
Thanks 744driver! I am completely looking at it as a positive! I can't wait to get in that machine. Used to fly 737-200's and had a blast with those dials so I imagine it will all come back fairly quickly!

Thank you for all the positive stuff you post on here. You've been a wealth of information along with a lot of other people. These boards are unbelievably helpful when you're talking to the right people!

Aloha!

I've been following this thread and I think I've read every post. However, just to clarify, are you saying that if you live in base @MIA/HSV that it often happens that you're not gone for 17 days at a time? I know it's been said many times before about planning on 17 days away and you won't be disappointed, but I just wondered if you would share more of your insight on these bases.

Thanks.

You have to understand that NOTHING is set in stone at Atlas. The trips out of HSV and MIA tend to be 3 and 4 day trips. You would go out to LUX and back or Mexico City, Guadalajara, HSV for example. If you live within an hour or two of HSV, then you could be home quite a bit. But you could also have your entire pattern change while driving to the airport and end up in Africa.

Yes, it has been said a lot but it never hurts to clarify this important point. If you can't handle being away for at least 17 days, then do the next guy a favor and don't take the job.

I truly think that our new contract will have some nice improvements, but we are still a global non-scheduled freight hauling company with many military contracts too. The good thing is that this characteristic keeps it all very interesting.
