It depends. If the trip starts close to JFK and the pilot lives near JFK then the patterned travel and the gateway travel will overlap. For example suppose a guy lives in ABE and the pattern starts with a JFK - ORD commercial. The pilot will just commercial ABE to ORD at about the same time that the pattern shows JFK to ORD.

On the other hand if the first leg on the pattern is a limo JFK to WRI to operate, and the pilot lives in STL, then he is going to have to get into position on an X day.

This situation is not unique to JFK. Every base will have patterns that start with a commercial flight from the base to the first operating leg, it just happens more often in JFK. How that works for you depends on where you live, the location of the base and where the first operating leg starts. Sometimes you eat the bear, and sometimes the bear eats you.

We have bases. The company provides transportation that saves those who commute from having to jumpseat. We do not have home basing. These are key points that must be understood.

742Dash,

What's causing a little confusion is some of us are chiming in without identifying which airplane we're on.

For example, JFK 767 guys will almost never have to go in a day early because the airplane is almost never there. (only exception i can think of is the Caribbean Air charter, and that's over with) CVG 767 guys typically start in base, but may get lucky if they get start at a DHL outstation or get an AMC trip.

I do not see any difference in the fleets. Things eb and flow with regard to schedules and bases. Right now CVG flying tends to start in base for both fleets. That can change as/if the base grows. Even JFK has been pretzelized at times, for example when the Classic JFK base was starting every trip out of JFK/WRI/DOV.

IN any case the system is what it is, and it is unfortunate that stress is created by missunderstandings. We also have to keep in mind that there are a lot of guys who like just as it is -- people who live in ANC, MIA and LAX for example.

What do y'all mean by limo?

In the most general meaning of the term.

Perhaps "Limo with 532,435 miles on it and on its third owner" would have been more descriptive. But the lowest cost! And what does Travel care if we are late or dead?

Could be any sort of ride. I've seen regular taxi cabs, mini vans, full size vans, large busses, Lincoln Town Cars, stretch Town Cars, once rode a 40 foot stretch Humvee limo, rickshaw, pack mule, etc...

So how do you pack for 17 days? Not knowing if you are going to somewhere with full sun or 15 feet of snow.
