Let's say you're based in JFK. If they send you to JFK to start the trip, or home from JFK at the end of the trip, it's imputed income and the tax for the ticket will be deducted from your pay. Same thing with the hotel at your crew base, you take the tax hit until you start your trip. If your trip is scheduled to depart at 6 am on the first day of your pattern, obviously you're going to have to come in on your last day off and get enough rest.
If your trip starts anywhere else, even another crew base, no tax! With the JFK 767 base, it's not an issue. the airplane never goes through there, so I have yet to pay a penny in imputed income. the 767 freighter in CVG, however, ALWAYS goes through CVG, so you'd get it there, unless you bid a trip that begins at the outstation.
Can a Whale driver chime in on the 747 experience?

I will just add that some bases seem to have almost all their trips start in base (HSV, MIA, CVG) while JFK seems to have at least 50 percent of the lines start with a DH from New York.

The computer has to show it that way. Very rarely does anything begin in JFK. By far most of the JFK trip pairings originate elsewhere. Since JFK is your base (if you are indeed based there) the computer has to show you moving from your base to where the pairing begins. What really happens is the company buys you a ticket from your gateway airport to where you need to be. It's now September and I have had to actually be in JFK for the start of a pairing precisely '0' times this year.

This is one of my many devices in trying to determine where I would want to be based. And I am liking the JFK look. How senior is JFK? Can one of you currents give a list to show the list of domiciles and their senority? As a new hire where ate you most likely to be based out of ground school?

Dude...focus...breathe deeply. Prepare for the interview process. Practice the telephone interview and smile while you're talking--it really makes a difference in how you sound. Study the topics and prepare your references for the test. Practice the HR interview scenario. And don't forget the most important decision--tie or no tie? You'll get to fill out a standing bid after you get your employee number!

Get the interview first. Then the job. And don't worry about the base. You will end up where they need you. If and only if you have a choice, your choice will be determined by class seniority and what's left when it get's to you. When you get to that point, if you don't like it....they can help you out.
