As a side note...therein lies a gem of truth about why the defense budget is so hard to get a handle on. Efficiency is never one of the big items on the list when the design competition begins.
Now back to our regularly scheduled thread.

Many years ago I was sitting in Boeing's Performance Engineer course in Seattle and I got to know a couple of USAF guys and they were talking about how the USAF was getting the B757s soon (mid to late 90s).
I asked why the 757 v the 767? One of them said because senior DOD officials and even Congressional staffers felt the public would not like it if they got a widebody to move people around...
I said, that may be true, but the public would hate it even more if the USAF ends up with the wrong airplane for the mission you guys need to accomplish...he said that was above his pay grade, and beyond any logical reason he could come up with!!
That was almost 20 years ago...I have no doubt that the same logic is alive and well in all Government procurement schemes.
Sorry for the thread drift...

They're even more inefficient when we're empty half the time. But if Atlas wants to haul 150K lbs of cargo 10 hours over the pacific to land on a 3500' strip in BFE and then backup out of parking on their own, she'll do.

I LOVE IT!!!! How in the world did you find this? It's quite appropriate because eleven (yes 11) pilots in my unit including the Squadron Commander have been hired by Atlas!! 5 are in school now, 3 in the pool, 1 on military leave and me and the other are flying the line and loving it!
It's a great compnay to work for and the flying is challenging, but fun. I had my most difficult landing in Ramstein yesterday with really strong crosswinds. Worked out well, but still very challenging. You have to accept somewhat of a crab in this plane because you don't want to dip a wing too low and scrape a pod. It lands well and is very stable in gusty winds.
Best of luck to the new hires.
Cheers
